Wow, he’s ugly as hell. Sure hope he can act.
I’m willing to reserve judgment until we see him play the role, but for crap’s sake someone cut that guy’s hair.
This bed-head look has got to go, it just looks ridiculous!
I will miss David though, hopefully he can go on to do something fun.
He looks Doctor-ish in this photo someone on Outpost Gallifrey has dug up.
Hi NailBunny, welcome back!
Don’t mind his age, don’t mind his interesting face or emo hair. My only complaint is his voice, cos he sounds like Jamie bloody Oliver.
We need to recruit Christoper Eccleston to tell this guy how GREAT it is to only be the Doctor for one year.
I can safely say I have never laid eyes on this actor in anything at all, so I have no idea what sort of a job he’ll do. But I am cautiously optimistic.
Bring it on, Dr New Who.
And also - is it just me or is he the most ancient looking 26 year old the world has ever seen?
This amuses me - Tennant was the same as when he started as Peter Davidson was when he quit - 34.
Davidson was 30 when he started.
The approximate ages of each Doctor during their tenure, (there’s several variables not accounted for - actual production dates vs birthdays, primarily):
1/Hartnell - 55-58.
2/Troughton - 46-49.
3/Pertwee - 51-55.
4/Tom Baker - 40-47.
5/Davidson - 30-34.
6/Colin Baker - 41-44.
7/McCoy - 44-54 (though there were several years of no Who in there, he did appear in the movie).
8/ McGann - 37 (no appearances outside the movie).
9/Eccleston - 41.
10/Tennant - 34-38.
11/Smith - 27-?.
Does he really look that young when put against Davidson and Tennant? Or even McGann, the Bakers, and Eccleston, for that matter? And does the age drop (11 years) really look that extreme up against Hartnell-Troughton (12 years), Pertwee-T Baker (15 years), T Baker-Davidson (17 years), or McCoy-McGann (17 years)?
He’s going to be the first Doctor who’s younger than me, but given how close I am in age to Tennant (6 years younger), that was bound to happen this regeneration or the next, unless one of them put Tom Baker’s tenure to shame, so I really can’t get bothered by that.
As to looks, I think he looks a little on the older side, given his age, IMO - he reminds me of Michael York, circa 1976, who I thought looked a bit old to be playing Logan in Logan’s Run (and, checking his Wikipedia article, he was 34 at the time, so I was right - hah!).
Hah, given I was researching the ages of the different actors, it took me half an hour to compose my post - needless to say, I agree…kid looks old for his age.
Woah, here’s the first google result for “Matt Smith”…
I would totally love this guyas The Doctor.
I just watched a clip of this guy doing something (a link on a me-fi discussion) and he reminded me of a cross between Tennant and Davison. I think he might be just fine, so let’s hold off on the hatin’.
Not going to cast judgement until I see him in action. I’d never heard of David Tennant before his casting, and that turned out well.
But it is a bit out of left field, and I’m not sure what to think. I was kind of looking forward to Paterson Joseph.
403 forbidden
Yup, really.
Yep, for me, at least.
Huh. Just downloaded it again.
PM me with where to send the jpeg, folks.
I remember the complaints when it was revealed that Tennant was to replace Eccleston. “He’s too young!” “Just a pretty boy.” “Do they want to appeal to the tweeners!?”
It turns out Tennant had acting chops to make him the bestest Doctor evah for many people, and a close second for those who grew up with [insert name here].
I have trust in Moffat and considering this:
I’m not too concerned.
Copy the link and paste it into the browser bar.
ETA: Woah, had that page open longer than I thought. That was re Darth Nader’s link, obviously.
EATA: Woah, he does have a neck!
He’s…interesting looking, to put it gently. His hair squicks me out though, it’s greasy and weirdly cut. Makes me want to grab a bottle of shampoo and a pair of shears.
He was one year old when Tom Baker left the show. At this rate, it won’t be long before we get a Doctor who declares in a Children in Need special that bloody Eccles was “*MY *doctor”.
