Boy, what a hardship it is to play for millions of dollars. It’s not like other players don’t try this stuff, but you just knew that T.O. was going to pull this kind of thing. It’s true that he put up monster numbers, it’s true that he was arguably the Eagles MVP last year (you could make a case for McNabb), but it’s also true that his head barely makes it through the door due to its inflation and his ego large enough to cover the entire star in Teaxs Stadium.
By this time next year the Eagles will be in disarray. You could see the signs with T.O. and McNabb last year, and this is the second step. I don’t think that that egomaniac can keep it together for another year. This next season better be the one when they win the Super Bowl, otherwise it ain’t never gonna happen.
Hey, T.O.:
That contract is barely a YEAR old. And it was YOU that signed it.
Just once, I’d love to see management take a hard line with one of these idiots and let him hold out for two or three seasons.
Granted, NFL contracts aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on, but the players are perfectly content to ignore that becuase of the immediacy of signing bonuses, and, well, quite frankly, because their union is so weak that any labor unrest would destroy them. But this is not a new situation, and ol’ T.O. was (or should have been) well aware of his surroundings before he signed his name.
First, you wanted security and respect on a winning team, T.O. And you got that. Now, you want… what? More security? More respect? Fewer good teammates (after you blow the cap)?
I wish there were a shut-up bonus for idiots like T.O.
How long do you think it’ll be before he plays the “keeping a proud man down” strategy, or even the race card?
Seeing as he did it repeatedly while playing for the Niners, I’d lay my on tommorrow. You know, I said he was going to wreck Philly’s locker room when the trade happened, but then he pretty much behaved himself last season. Color me unsurprised.
Wait, does he want a new contract, or does he want to restructure it so he gets more money up-front? If he just wants more money up front, I don’t see as much of a problem.
I knew this was going to happen a year ago. May even have predicted it on the boards.
As an Eagles fan, I hate being right.
They will. Reid and Banner aren’t going to blow their wad on a WR over 30, and especially not this schmuck.
His contract was specifically structured so that there was a window after 2 years where they could release him without too much pain. In fact, even if there hadn’t been this blow-up, I expect the idea was there that he might only be a short-term fix.
And Freddie Mitchell is also being given the ticket out of town he’s been looking for.
Philly has 5 picks in the first 3 rounds; 2 will be WRs.
No, you’re not a bad person for being happy about this. You’re a bad person for being a Cowboys fan.
I kid! I kid!
Anyway…I knew two things when this deal was inked last year – 1) Although T.O. would put up impressive numbers, the Eagles were still going to come up short. 2) The Eagles would end up regretting the signing.
I’m with you, lieu…as a Giants fan, I say “look out for #1, T.O.! And please, whatever you do, don’t pay attention to what happened when Keenan McCardell decided to play whiney-ass games like this”.
As a Redskins fan that works in Baltimore and lives in PA; [Nelson] Ha, ha. [/Nelson]
We got TO asking for mo’ money in Philly after losing the Super Bowl, we got Drew “Barely Mobile” Bledsoe, being backed up by Vinnie “He’s Still Alive?” Testaverde in Dallas, and Eli “Deer in the Headlights” Manning in New York. The Draft isn’t until next weekend and they don’t start practice until summer. Man, I love football.
Please don’t point out that Lavar is upset about how he was treated last year when he hurt his knee, that Sean Taylor & Santana Moss haven’t shown up for practices because they both want more money and both have Drew Rosenhaus as their agent, that we have the most expensive back up QB in the league ($48 mil for Brunell) or the number of holes that need to be filled on both sides of the line. I get it; we still suck too.
Yeah, but I have a feeling two of those might be off to Dallas to move up to the 20th spot to grab a better WR. Clayton looks like the best bet for a ready to start WR in the latter half of the draft.
I don’t understand why teams don’t take the Ottawa Senators’ approach to holdouts.
In 2000, Alexei Yashin scored 94 points and was the runner-up for the MVP award. He had one year left in a contract that would pay him $3.6-million/year. Yashin demanded more, but the Senators told him to go suck wind. Yashin refused to report to training camp. In November, the Sens suspending Yashin without pay for the balance of the season. It gets better. After the season was over, the Sens took Yashin to an arbitrator, who ruled that Yashin still owed the Senators the final year of his contract. Out of pure spite, the Sens kept Yashin on the team for the entire season. Every home game, he was booed mercilessly. Yashin couldn’t even tank the season because it was a contract year, and he needed to justify a raise in upcoming negotiations. After the season was over, the Sens traded his rights to the Islanders for Zdeno Chara, last year’s runner up for Defenceman of the Year, Jason Spezza, who was the AHL’s MVP this year, and Bill Muckalt. Needless to say, NHL player has held out while under contract since.
