“More power to them” is generally used as an expression of approval. What meaning do you intend in using it?
Really? 'round here it means “I may not agree with what they say, but will defend to the death their right to say it”.
That’s an odd thing to say, because I can see paying homage to deceased veterans IRRESPECTIVE of whether they actually believed in their cause, not because they truly believes in their cause.
A soldier fighting for the Confederacy had to put up with horrible conditions, fear, and most likely a gruesome death. I don’t think anyone deserves such treatment. I’m willing to eke out some acknowledgment of their sacrifice as humans, for whom I have no idea if they went willingly to war or not.
But if that guy died and with his last breath, gasped as inspiration to his fellow soldiers, “I die a true believer in the cause that the Confederacy was established by God himself to make sure slavery of the Black man survives as long as men walk this earth!”? Well, for that solider, I have no damned respect for him dying dedicated to his racist, disgusting cause. Thinking that such a man has a shred of nobility, or deserves recognition, is so far from my concept of normal thinking that I can’t brush it off as a mere difference of opinion.
Honoring someone for being committed to a racist, disgusting cause that belongs on the ash-heap of history is literally an endorsement of the racist sentiments that fellow died for.
