And the most homoerotic movie ever made is...

Well, next to Backdoor Bukkake Barracks, I’m gonna throw my vote behind 300.

I came in to vote for the craptacular 300. As I told my wife about it, that movie way gayer than *The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994). *

I also thought *300 * was terrible but found *Priscilla * campy and funny and sad in various parts.

Ooooh, I end up provoking yet another thread, I’m getting good at this.

Well I’m sticking with my nomination from the original thread - Topgun. Seriously, that film gave me all the masturbation fodder I needed to keep me going through my teenage years until I could get my hands on some real gay porn.

I don’t remember…I only read the book once, and that was ages ago. But I saw the movie recently on one of the premium movie channels, and I was struck by how much was very implicitly implied. Hell, even Christian Slater wanted to get in on the act!

Gotta mention Spartacus. The “oysters and snails” scene in the Roman bath is a classic.

Forgot to add, I’d love to be able to give my two penneth’s worth on whether 300 is more homoerotic than Topgun but as the film bored me so much I ended up switching it off after about half an hour (before most of the real abbage began, or so I understand). Clearly it’s not just gay porn that consists of a bunch of pretty men with few clothes on and no engaging plot.

Here’s an excellent synopsis of the film.

I was going to mention this (though I like to call it* Da Passion o’ da Cripes*).

Oh lordy - thanks.

No no no. The various Greek cultures had clear demarcations of what was and was not acceptable male sexual behavior. In general, penetration = good, being penetrated = emasculating. Woman = not a man = acceptable sexual object. Boy = not a man = acceptable sexual object. Slave = not (really) a man = acceptable sexual object.

Two free adult males having sex, however, was a big fat deal; the “top” was just doing what came naturally, while the “bottom” was either:

  1. a depraved and loathsome pervert (the only thing more despicable than wanting to be sodomized was willingly giving oral sex),
  2. a victim suffering pretty much the most obscene humiliation possible, or
  3. gritting his teeth and “taking it” because his (non-sexual) love and respect for the other guy outweigh his natural revulsion at the very idea (this is where Plato’s musings on “ideal armies” came in).

The Spartans did pretty much think the Athenians (and everyone else) were a bunch of effete poofters, but because they were decadently lounging on cushions with their catamites feeding them grapes, instead of getting it in, getting it off, and going out to kill some more Thracians like real men, not because they were buggering little boys as such.

Not sure if it’s homoeroticism per se or just a thoroughly gay sensibility, but the Astaire-Rogers musicals come to my mind. Fred is ostensibly romancing Ginger, but the passion all goes into the dances. The dialogue between them, even the singing, is all mannerism and no feeling. And Fred’s world doesn’t really include women - in fact it’s usually centered around prissy old Edward Everett Horton. As lovely as Rogers is, Astaire is the only real sex object on view.

Finally, there’s the stylized elegance of everything: the sets, the clothes, the props. Yes, it was escapism, but escapism with a definite flavor of androgyny. Only the music and the dance can be appreciated for what they are (happily, though, they are enough).

Rope.

But X2 has an actual coming out scene.

Accompanied by the obligatory mother’s “It’s my fault” comment.

Holy mutherashit yes. I don’t know why I didn’t think of it.

Strangers on a Train has got to be up there, too, although it could be argued the ghey is not at all hidden, only tastefully not-named.

“Henry V” with Kenneth Branagh edges out “The Lion In Winter”. I once envisioned a remake of the latter with Queen Eleanor played by Madame(Waylon Flowers).

Am I the only one here that saw the original Mad Max? Jeebus

Rocky 3. A lot of Rocky and Apollo hugging in effeminate tops.

Kiss of the Spider Woman. Gave me the creeps.

I think you mean Mad Max 2 (1981) aka “Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior” - USA

The first movie had very little in terms of homoerotic that I can recall. The second one though had a lot more, but nothing compared to 300.
