And the winner is...

I was playing some WoW, doing the Warsong Gulch battleground, and the game was tied 1-1 when time expired; Blizzard declared us the winners because we captured the last flag.

It got me to thinking, what if other games used the “last score” to determine the winner?

I was trying to find out, how titles in different games world wide, would’ve had a different winner if they used the same winning formula as Blizzard.

Apparently no Superbowl has gone to overtime yet.

There were, however, 55 times that the world series went into overtime,16 Stanley cups have been decided in overtime, and 3 of the last 6 world cups have been won in overtime.

Is there an easy way to find out who won the game, who scored last in regulation time, and what percentage of games would’ve had a different outcome?

All my Googles are doing is listing a the number of times the event has occurred, and occasionally the winner, but never the who scored last bit.

For baseball you can go to

http://www.baseball-reference.com/postseason/<YEAR>_WS.shtml

And replace <YEAR> with the year you’re interested in to get the box scores for the world series that year. It’s trivially easy to tell from a box score who scored last.

TY!

Okay, the results for baseball if tie games had been determined by who scored last:

Game Differences

2 - Game where the game would end in a tie
20 - Games the team that scored last in 9 innings, won in over time
23 - Games where the team that scored last in 9 innings lost the game

Series Differences

2 - Number of series forced to 5 games.
1 - Number of series forced to 6 games.
6 - Number of series forced to 7 games.
7 - Number of series won earlier
1 - Number of series where there was no winner (Tie game in game 7 in 1991)
3 - Number of new champions
           1957 Yankees over Braves
           1964 Yankees over Cardinals
           1975 Red Sox over Reds)

FIFA World Cup Finals that were tied after 90 minutes:
1934 - Italy scored the last goal in regulation, and won 2-1 in extra time
1966 - England scored the last goal in regulation, and won 3-1 in extra time
1978 - Nethrelands scored the last goal in regulation, but lost 3-1 in extra time
1994 - no goals were scored before the penalty kick shootout
2006 - Italy scored the last goal in regulation, and won in the penalty kick shootout (no goals were scored in the extra 30 minutes)
2010 - only one goal was scored in the match
2014 - only one goal was scored in the match

Only once - 1978 - did the team scoring the last goal in regulation not win.

Somebody refresh my memory; wasn’t there a time when, in some cup competitions, if a home-and-away was tied on total goals and away goals, the team that scored first was declared the winner?
