Yes, losing all the leg hair is definitely a plus, since I was so shaky from the steroids that were with the chemo I probably would have sliced an artery shaving. Did your scapl ever get sore, sunburned-y feeling? My husband shaved mine off with his vibrating razor too, and my scalp was numb feeling for a while. I had to keep shaving the middle for a while since I didn’t want a mohawk, but after a while it was all bald. But how do guys get the shiny bald look? Mine was never shiny!
ivylass, I have a picture of my sister right here next to me at work. She has gorgeous ginger hair - really a standout in the family picture. Of course, she looked stunning when she was bald too, just as you do.
This challenge, as you surely know, will pass and your hair will return.
Do you have any sense of, um, freeingness? Free-edness? Freeosity? what with not having to wonder if/when it’s going to go, and with not having to comb it or get it caught and so on? I did, back in the day. I also kept my growing-back-in stubble bleached platinum for the first half inch or so, to make it look less like stubble.
Still hoping for those “after” pix when the camera’s cooperating!
I don’t know if there’s stuff called “dome wax”, but I know there’s stuff called “head lube”, which does the same thing. It’s an after-shave moisturizer for the scalp that tends to make the skin shiny, and it smells okay. You’ll find it near all the other men’s shaving stuff, and probably next to the “head blades” in Publix.
Once my mom’s hair started falling out, she enjoyed the freedom to just throw on a scarf in the morning and look fully accessorized. When we visited her a couple of weekends ago, her bedroom had a ton of different scarves hanging about in all sorts of colors; I guess she’d been going all out and using it as the “interesting” part of her outfit lately.
If you can get a hold of the video of Melissa Etheridge (post-chemo) performing Janis Joplin’s “Take a Piece of my Heart” at the Grammy Awards, it will blow you away. Very cathartic.
Ivylad’s got the pictures on the computer Adobe, but we can’t access them to get them to Photobucket. I’m going to see if we can just load them onto a regular drive…and all you techno-savvy people can just stop laughing at me.
Isn’t she, though? If I feel run-down, the weight of the world on my shoulders and low motivation, I take a look at that. There she was, after months of chemotherapy, maybe a couple of weeks to recuperate and practice; she gets up on stage on the biggest night in American music in front of the best entertainers in the business and nails it.
I have a handbasket awaiting me for that one. I didn’t know she had cancer and saw the hair at the Grammys and said, “What the hell…is she making a gay political statement or what?” Sometimes I’m such a dork. :smack:
One of the people who presented this big music program on Spanish TV aeons ago (well, 15-25 years ago) was a beautiful woman with a tattoed, shaved head. Maybe you can get temp tattoos?
I haven’t posted before this, but have been following the thread(s), however, the GI Jane pic posted motivated me.
ivylass, I think you look amazing bald–it makes your already great eyes look FANTASTIC. (And you have such a nicely shaped face anyway.) I’m sorry that it’s under such circumstances though and I’m thinking of you, sending strong wishes your way.
Oh, you look great bald! Does it sound too weird to say you have a pretty head? If you were the punk type (and came to me for advice) I’d say to keep the look. Do you ever wear dangly earrings?
