I have a Motorola Razr Maxx with Android 4.1.2, whatever flavor that is. I want to know if there is anyway of disabling the phone without disabling the 4G data, the wi-fi, or the bluetooth? Switching to airplane mode disables all of these. I want to be able to use my phone to stream internet radio without the possibility of an incoming call disrupting the music. As it is now, the phone function takes priority over all other functions on the phone (oh, you are in the middle of composing a post? Too bad, someone is calling right now!), but I’d rather be able to turn the phone off but still have access to data, wi-fi, and bluetooth. I still favor using my iPod touch in some instances because a call never interrupts what I’m doing on it.
Set up a profile that has silent ring and no vibrate, and diverts calls to voicemail.
Well, not exactly what you asked for, but if you enable Airplane mode, you CAN then enable WiFi while still in Airplane mode. As long as you maintain a WiFi signal, the 4G data will remain off. The phone will also be off of course, but unfortunately I think bluetooth will be, as well. Maybe you can switch on bluetooth while in Airplane mode, like with WiFi, but I don’t think so.
Hmm, if it’s a GSM phone, you could remove the SIM card, but then no 4G, only WiFi.
"As long as you maintain a WiFi
signal, the 4G data will remain off. "
Just realized that, as long as you’re in Airplane mode, 4G data will remain off, regardless of the WiFi signal. Just disregard that sentence.
I know the app “juicedefender” can set your phone into tablet mode - no cell radio apart from data (and wifi)
Huh, I just tried it, you CAN switch on Bluetooth along with WiFi, while in Airplane mode. So, still no 4G data, but you get everything else you wanted.
How about taking off the SIM card? I have a couple of older smartphones lying around with no SIM card, and they can connect to the Wifi and use BLuetooth with no problem at all.
Of course I understand that it’d be something of a hassle to store the SIM card safely.
I already said that, but since 4G data still wouldn’t work, Airplane mode would accomplish the same thing much more simply.
Whoops, sorry, you’re right - just slipped my mind.
Thanks for the help everyone. I’ll look into the juicedefender app.
Do you have DDTM mode? If so, that should do it.
My phone’s not on Jellybean, but it’s located under settings >> Call >> Other call settings.
You can try this, but I don’t know if it will work. I’m on 4.2.2, so some of the menus might be a bit different:
[ul]
[li]Go into phone (like you were going to make a call by typing a number)[/li][li]Bring up the menu and go into settings[/li][li]Go into Call Forwarding[/li][li]Set Always Forward to your voicemail number (your voicemail number should be conveniently displayed on that same page under Forward when busy, etc.)[/li][li]To turn it off, go back to the Call Forwarding page[/li][li]Go into Always Forward[/li][li]Select Disable[/li][/ul]
You should try that, and call from your work phone, friends mobile, etc. and see if it causes the desired behavior. That is, it should send all calls to voicemail without interrupting you.
I can see neither “DDTM” nor “Call Forwarding” under the phone settings. I wonder if I have some sort of crippled or modified version of Android, courtesy of Verizon.
Maybe DDTM isn’t under call settings. Data settings, maybe?
Instead of going to the Phone, then Settings, try going to the general Android settings and then “Call Settings” and you should see similar call forwarding settings. (Such “conditional call forwarding” settings generally don’t work with prepaid plans, only standard contract plans)
BTW, did you understand from my (admittedly, convoluted) previous posts that you can actually do everything you want, except use 4G data, by using Airplane mode? ISTM that you’d usually be somewhere with WiFi when you’re willing to disable calls to your cell phone, so not being able to use 4G data during those times would be a relatively minor issue. (Not to mention that streaming music would generally/preferably be done on WiFi, rather than 4G.)
Yes, I did understand that, but my interest is to be able to stream music while driving which is why I need the 4G. I don’t like to answer the phone when I’m driving, and I’d prefer it if an incoming call wouldn’t interrupt the streaming music since I’m not going to answer anyway. I’d rather just check voicemail once I stop. A 4G enabled tablet that has no phone function seems to be what I need, and it seems that there should be a way to do that with my phone but I haven’t figured it out yet.
Now I realize that this phone has very low options for call settings. My cheapo Audiovox pre-paid phone that I had 12 years ago had better options.
Change the network ? - to one that won’t let you register as a functioning phone.
This trick is apparently working here- but your mileage may vary. Test it. Change to a network that isn’t going to let you roam onto them.
