iPhones: When International...

Does the iPhone (iPhone3, if it matters…you know, the model before the antenna fiasco) default to Wifi automatically where Wifi is available, as opposed to transmitting via cellular? I guess when in the US, I take it for granted. And, maybe by dumb luck, I don’t blow my dataplan. BUT!!! Now overseas, that could prove to be a costly mistake! What do the SDopers know about this?

Bonus Q: Can I turn off the cellular connection to be 100% sure it is using Wifi only? Airplane mode blocks all transmissions. Is there some other option under Settings?

It should default to wifi, yes - at least, that’s what models sold in the UK do.

And yes for most recent models, you should be able to do Settings-General-Network and turn off Mobile/Cellular Data, or just data roaming.

Yes. Airplane mode does block the cellular network, but you can re-enable Wi-Fi even with Airplane mode on. Simply turn on Airplane mode (Wi-Fi will turn off), then tap Wi-Fi to turn it back on. You will then connect via Wi-Fi only.

Really? If this really works, it’s the best kept secret amongst even the most experienced iPhoners! I’ll try it out!

Make sure you turn off data roaming. THAT can result in a large bill.

It does work, yes. Most folks want to keep their voice connection, so it didn’t occur to me, but if that’s not important to you then go right ahead, Just Ed is correct.

Zippity doo dah, indeed he IS correct! This is great to know! Do you know not even AT&T could answer this for me? But, why should they know the products they’re ONLY marketing! LoL!

Right - we most often just keep turned off the data roaming setting, making the device become a “mere” telephone+iPod Touch when outside the US zone (just did that earlier in the month).

Jinx’s AT&T reps may claim to be unaware of it, but Apple openly and clearly states in at least two different places of the 3GS user guide that you can do WiFi in the “Airplane Mode”. Of course, Steve and the boys in Cupertino are not the parties that stand to make money off your data roaming overages…

Well, I dunno. Until recently I worked for O2, a cellphone company in the UK that markets the iPhone, as a CSA. And, obviously, I knew this. Though I don’t think it was part of my training. It’s just that an onslaught of pissed off customers with huge roaming bills was not a fun day at the office for me.
