Androids I like but me they don't sometimes

Background: I was walking on the street with my Samsung Galaxy Plus in my hand, chatting with a friend. I got hit from behind by a woman on a bicycle. She took off, cutting through an area I could not go into. When she hit me, my phone went flying and, of course, the screen had a bunch of cracks. The darn thing lasted nine more days before the screen gave up the ghost. So, I bought a new Android phone, this time an OPPO 10.

Problem: On my previous phone, I had been using a VPN called Shadow Rocket. The new phone will not install the latest versions of that, saying it has a virus. The earlier versions are only for 32-bit Androids and, evidently, my new phone is a 64-bit. The beauty of Shadow Rocket was that it always worked and it’s free. I’ve tried a few others (I think 3 others), but they either want credit card up front or simply would not load.

So, can anyone point me to a good Android VPN apk which I can download onto my computer, send to my phone, and get connected across the Great Firewall? (Yes, I’m still in Beijing.)

TIA.

I use Express VPN. I don’t know about firewalls but it with skype fooled my phone into thinking my phone was in the US and not Italy when I had to make phone calls.

ProtonVPN has a free version that has US, NL, JP servers. I’ve started using their pay version and like it so far, you get more servers and other features for that.

I haven’t tried it direct from .apk but here’s the mirror

I forgot to update this when I got the issue resolved.

So, I went to www.fileplanet.com and searched for the other file name of Shadow Rocket every day until there was an update to work on 64-bit phones. Then I did the following:

  • Download the APK to my computer
  • E-mail the APK to myself
  • Open E-mail on the phone
  • Download the attachment to the phone
  • Click on the yes button under the pop-up question, “Open downloaded file?”
  • Click on the yes button under the pop-up question, “Allow browser to install apps?”

Then open the new app and all’s well that ends well!
