Angioplast........Oh hell, the balloon thing

Background:

When my son was 2 he had heart surgery for a blockage in his Aorta called a Coarctation of the Aorta.
Now:

He is 6 now, and has annual check ups with the cardiologist. Yesterday he had his check up and it appears that the scar tissue from the original surgery is causing the same type of blockage that was removed. They want to do an Angioplast (sp), but the Dr. hurried out of the room before my ex-wife could ask any questions about this procedure. (I wish I had been there. That Dr. wouldn’t gone anywhere till I was done with her.) Anyway, since my ex-wife wasn’t able to get any info on the procedure then I was wondering if anyone in here knows anything about it. Risk factors, healing time, and thing like that.
I really appreciate any input you guys & gals may have.

Well, my boyfriend is going to be having the same procedure in December. And my father’s best friend had the procedure a couple of years ago. I’m sorry I don’t have any info on it, but I will talk to my boyfriend tonight and see what the doc said. Best wishes, though. My BF was born with a congenital heart defect, and he’s having his pacemaker replaced along with the angioplasty. (They say if this doesn’t work, then they are putting him on the list for a heart transplant.) He is only 24 and has been having surgeries and procedures done since the day he was born, so I can kind of sympathize with you.
I’ll let you know if I find out anything today.

Speaking as a physician who is familiar with angioplasty, I would say you really, really need to talk to a pediatric cardiologist about this one. Kids are not just small adults, and most of the info you’d get here would be about adults having had the procedure.

Good luck. They can do amazing things for kids today with modern technology.

I scheduled a second opinion with a different Dr. today. I will be sure to be there for the new appointment and I will sit on the Dr. if I have to, until all my questions are answered.

Oh yeah, check this out. Somewhat unrelated, but, my ex-wife said that I have to tell our son what is going on since she woun’t be able to handle telling him. I don’t plan on telling him until we have more info and the time is nearer, but it just seems kinda shitty to lay all this on me. I personally think it should be both of us with the Dr. telling him.

Sorry about the little rant. I had to get that out.

There’s a joke about Hayley Joel Osmont in A.I. begging to be made here.

Very well. Greathouse Jr. will be fine, but with an interesting side effect: if something startles him, his heart skips, causing him to yell “Stuttering Stanley! Stuttering Stanley! Stuttering Stanley!”.

[sub]Thought an “I see dead people” ref would have been out of line as well as tired[/sub]

And FTR, it’s Haley Joel Osment.
