Anime!

In the past few years I’ve become a big fan of anime. The problem is I have trouble finding good anime on DVD. So far my favorite movie has been Princess Mononoke and my favorite series in Cowboy Bebop. I also enjoyed a series called “Beserker” at Project A-Kon in Dallas. But I haven’t been able to find that one on DVD anywhere.

Anyone have any favorite anime they just love to watch?

Marc

Well, you’ve hit one of mine right on the head: Cowboy Bebop. I really like that series. Another great series has to be Neon Genesis Evangelion. I know, I know, everyone likes it, but I’ve got to say it. Same with Ninja Scroll.
Some other ones that I like a lot: Princess Mononoke, Grave of the Fireflies, X, Fist of the North Star, Outlaw Star.

This also came up in a thread in IMHO:

As to where to get them on DVD? I have a store in my town that orders them in. I have friends that have ordered them from Amazon. Also there’s a lot of sites around that sell them, just check in a search engine.

I really like the music from the series. Which is odd since most of the music I’ve heard in anime are either bad or forgettable. Even the music in Princess Mononoke is forgettable. I just watched episode 5 of Cowboy Bebop and I’ll be damned if the music during the big gunfight wasn’t one of the most beautiful things I’ve heard in a long time. Not only that but I actually find the humor to be funny.

I really liked Ninja Scroll except for some of the gratuitous sex scenes. Not that I’m against sex in anime its just after the initial scene with rock man and poison girl the rest weren’t needed and were a little creepy. I’ll check out Neon Genesis Evangelion one of these days. After I finish buying the rest of Cowboy Bebop on DVD.

Take care.

cowboy Bebob is one of my new favorites, watched all the episdoes whie i was on vaacation.

Kenshin is good, and so is spriggan. I have all the episodes of EVA up at school. God bless the rpi network.
if you want them, i can probally get them too you.

I pretty much have to plug Rurouni Kenshin as an awesome series. I also highly recommend Fushigi Yugi, for the reasons that I/AudreyK (who was my mouthpiece, since I wasn’t on the boards yet) cite.

For movies, I highly recommend Ninja Scroll and the ubiquitous Akira. Classics, both.

As for buying them online, Amazon and Buy/Reel.com usually have the best prices, though Express has one of the more comprehensive selections out there.

Oh, and if you liked Berserk (which I might be able to get for you on VCD), you’ll probably also like Bastard!.

Those’re my recs for now, more to come. ^_^x

Yep Cowboy Bebop rules! Also, Rurouni Kenshin and Ninja Scroll

A few that haven’t been posted yet:

Serial Experiments: Lain, very dark, disturbing and surrealistic. Reminds me a little of David Lynch at his best.

In the same vein, Perfect Blue, is a very dark Hitchcockian mindfuck psycho-thriller. I’ve never seen another anime like it (unfortuneately).

On a lighter note, check out Trigun which treads similar satirical water as Cowboy Bebop

MGibson, if you like the music in Cowboy Bebop, definitely check out Macross Plus which has another great soundtrack by Yoko Kanno as well as being a great anime.

Cheers,
Hodge

There are A lot of anime stores around where I live (outskirts of Boston), so DVD’s aren’t that hard to come by. If there are any of these stores around your area, they usually sell or rent dvd’s, so check around there.

Oh, Definitely see Ninja Scroll.

Nadesico is ranking high up there in my fave’s list, then again Neon Genesis is one of the best and so is Sorcerer Hunters. But then there’s Lain. Damn, which one, which one?
