They did. They decided God was wrong.
One out of two ain’t bad. /s
I’ve always lumped Anita Bryant and Marabel Morgan (author of the infamous 1970s book The Total Woman, which advocates an almost comical level of deference by wives to their husbands) together in my mind because of their regressive views. Now a quick Google search tells me that Anita Bryant graduated from one of Marabel Morgan’s courses on how to surrender yourself to your husband for a happy, Christian marriage. Since she later divorced, I guess it didn’t work. Who’d a thunk.
Not only alive, but only 81. I would have thought she was in her 90’s at least.
She’s the same age as my mother; she clearly came across as a lot older than she acutally was during the '70s, when she was very present in the media.
Here’s a picture of her at some sort of press conference or interview, clearly related to her anti-gay crusade, from 1977. She looks older than 37, to my eyes, especially given that she was a beauty queen and entertainer, and thus, in theory, would have taken good care of her looks.
She was never someone I considered good-looking. She’s very mannish looking to me. Maybe it’s the harsh makeup and helmut hair. And she’s only 37 in that pic??? She looks 50.
She was ignorant of homosexuality unitil her husband told her “what gay men do” (that is to say, “what represses straight guys dream gay men do”) and so her crusade was against gay men, not IIRC, lesbians. Based on buttsex abhorrence, coprophobia, the usual.
As for her granddaughter, it’s just the law of averages catching up with an unrealistic ideology. Heinrich Himmler’s granddaughter married an Israeli man. Aamon Goethe’s granddaughter had a Nigerian father. The way things should be occur indifferently to however the assholes try to make them be.
This must be OT god.
I always assumed my mother was younger than Ms. Bryant by a few years. If she were still with us she would be 88 so clearly I was wrong. And in 1977 my mother looked younger than AB does in that picture. Maybe it’s the Florida sun that’s to blame.

How did I do that?
A new poster just got sent to the cornfield.

It’s good what you done to Abbatoir88. It’s real good.
I like to use my powers for good whenever possible.
Turns out all these years I was confusing Anita Bryant with Anita Baker. I felt so guilty enjoying “Sweet Love,” knowing what a hateful person she was. How glad I am to be wrong about something!
Anita Bryant sang “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” at LBJ’s funeral. I guess you could use that as make-out music. I know I’ve chosen worse.

It’s the “ick” factor for most of these people. Not anything the Bible actually says. It’s weird how much time some folks spend thinking about the sex lives of others.
What fascinates me is how seriously addicted to the Old Testament laws, but not all of them obviously, these so-called loving Christians seem to be when their contribution to the Bible says that stuff doesn’t matter now.
They seem to forget that the 10 Commandments came out of the OT*, and that when Jesus said, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” he was not making that up; he was quoting the OT, Leviticus 19:18. That whole section of Leviticus is known as the “Holiness Code,” and some Christians who repudiate the OT would do well to take a good, hard look at it.
Read it and weep, Anita (and Republicans in general):
Love Your Neighbor as Yourself [Leviticus 19:9-18]
9 “When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap your field right up to its edge, neither shall you gather the gleanings after your harvest. 10 And you shall not strip your vineyard bare, neither shall you gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard. You shall leave them for the poor and for the sojourner: I am the Lord your God.**
11 “You shall not steal; you shall not deal falsely; you shall not lie to one another. 12 You shall not swear by my name falsely, and so profane the name of your God: I am the Lord.**
13 “You shall not oppress your neighbor or rob him. The wages of a hired worker shall not remain with you all night until the morning. 14 You shall not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block before the blind, but you shall fear your God: I am the Lord.**
15 “You shall do no injustice in court. You shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great, but in righteousness shall you judge your neighbor. 16 You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people, and you shall not stand up against the life[a] of your neighbor: I am the Lord.**
17 “You shall not hate your brother in your heart, but you shall reason frankly with your neighbor, lest you incur sin because of him. 18 You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.**
My bold.
Well, dang. Who knew all that stuff was in there? BEFORE Jesus even?
