There was a time when I supported the invasion of Iraq by coalition forces, but I hasten to add that this was when my Govt. was convinced that WMD were in the hands of the Iraqis.
As it turns out no such weapons have been found and the country is in a total mess.
What do we do now?
If we get out of the country it descends into anarchy and civil war and possibly invasion by Iran.
If we remain the killings of UK/US and other military personnel continue unabated as does the killing of Iraqi civilians.
What do we do now?
I honestly have no idea how the whole mess can be resolved and I despair.
I am saddened at the increasing death toll, the injured, the suffering of all in Iraq
the destruction of the infrastructure of that nation, the shortages of food, water and other essentials.
Sometimes I think about Marshal Tito and Yugoslavia. With Hussein removed from power, the underlying conflicts in Iraq were exposed. The Sunnis, who had a disproportionate share of wealth and power, were not going to be happy about sharing it with the Shias. The Kurds seem to be doing well as a semi-autonomous group in the North. In the South, I don’t think a strong government can exist until the militias and their leaders are suppressed. It’s such a mess now that it might be better to partition the country into Kurd, Sunni and Shia regions.
A-t-P I doubt very much this would work. There are far to many warring factions among the Iraqi people themselves. Whatever the outcome of such a vote you can guarantee that accusations would be levelled of “fixing” a vote.
