Latest word: American Airlines Flight 587 from JFK to Santa Domingo (Dominican Republic) crashed just after takeoff in a residential neighborhood in Queens. As far as I know, there’s no other information available at this time …

All NYC area airports closed, bridges and tunnels leading into city closed

At least 4 buildings on fire

It’s on ABC right now. The military is saying they didn’t receive any kind of emergency notification from the FAA, just that the “plane had fallen off the radar”, and by the time they had the fighters in the air, the plane was already on the ground and burning.

It doesn’t HAVE to be terrorists, you know–planes do crash, in clear weather, for other reasons.

Terrorism not rules out though. But my question is this–> Why down a plane in a residential area?
Why did an engine blow off the plane before the crash?
If this was terrorism,how did they blow an engine off the plane?
Does this make any sense to anyone watching? If this was terrorism why crash in residential area??

My first incling is this is not terrorism, but horrible coincidence…

Evil - I can’t tune in the radio at work - it would be inappropriate to have that noise in my place of business. Also, my computer doesn’t refresh all of the time due to traffic on the new sites - if others get on, they can update all of us on the SDMB, which is less busy, comparatively.

Finally - different Dopers check different sites; I appreciate getting a somewhat broader view as the even plays out…
