Oh boy!
You know the reason puppies are so cute…they have to be, to keep you from murdering them. My stepson just got two puppies and his wife is giving birth in May…I wouldn’t want to be in their shoes!
Good luck with the newbie.
We’ve said similar things about why babies learn to smile at 2-3 months - out of self-preservation!
We were thinking back about our 3 past dogs - all goldens/golden mixes, and the times in our lives that we had him.
-3 dogs ago, Bowser, was a dog I got in college, before I met my wife. He was a totally laid back “quad dog” who was comfortable ANYWHERE, and lasted through all 3 of our kids’ births.
-Our second dog, Daisy, we got when our youngest was 6 yrs old. We didn’t want to deal w/ a really young kid and a puppy at the same time. So she was largely our dog when we had kids.
-Our last dog, Buster, we got when my youngest was a HS senior. So he, in large part, became our “empty nest” dog. As he aged, we became 3 supremely compatible “old dogs” together.
We are getting this guy at a time that all of our kids are out of the house and on their own. It will be entirely up to the 2 of us how we shape the dog and our lives w/ him. Hopefully, he’ll take us well into retirement. He’s a mini goldendoodle. We are looking forward to the smaller size and less hair than our past 3. We have the time and resources to dedicate to the dog, and are looking forward to a lot of road trips to dog-friendly hiking destinations.
An exciting prospect! Hopefully it will keep us young, rather than aging us prematurely!
I hope he does great for you, Dins. My sister’s heart’s desire is a goldendoodle. I would help her find one, but I don’t think she’s a good pet owner. If she does get one, it’ll be without my help.
They seem to be doing a better job of “standardizing” these mutts. This guy’s mom was 30#, and dad was 25# - so it would be pretty surprising if he were much bigger.
