Ok SDMB Botanists and flower mavens… what are these:
Purple Flower #1
Purple Flower #2
Purple Flower #3
Purple Flower #4
These were found in the same deciduous forest as the orchids of last week. Only these came from about a mile away, and up elevation of about 150 ft. These were under evergreens.
Carolina Allspice - Calycanthus floridus
What do I win?
NICE! You win riches of unimaginable value.
They will come to you soon, in the form of good positive vibes!
Thanks, that flower had me stumped.
You’re welcome. Note that in spite of the name, and the delicious scent of the flowers and seeds, it is NOT edible. It isn’t closely related to Jamaica allspice.
Right I googled it and came up with quite a bit of info. I’ve been trying and trying to find cool flowers and plants in my own backyard…this allows me to put up unusual photos, blow them up if I wish and put them on my walls.
Cheap art, gotta love it.

Since this may be the only thread on Calycanthus, one of my favorite native shrubs, on the SD, I’d like to point out some new hybrids here at NC State, very becoming. You may have run across them in yer Googling; if not here ya go. It’s interesting because it takes a great flower, like the one you posted, then, with a rather complex series of crosses, creates a very showy one.
Well, interesting to a plant geek like me, at least.
By the way, Phlospher, since the Connecticut Botanical Society doesn’t have Carolina allspice in its online wildflower guide at present, you might want to get in touch with them and offer to share your find information and photos so that they can add it to their site: info@ct-botanical-society.org
