Different thread, maybe. I believe in God. Thats just one of the many reasons I respect human life. I cant speak for this woman, but I would wager that she has no sense of any Deity looking over her shoulder. Or to take your side, no sense of the pressure from the moral segment of society. One or the other would work for me, both would be even better.
Im sick and tired of the anti-God zealots who think an anti-God society would be *better*. Equal maybe, but you cant argue better.
On a similar incident of irresponsibility, there was a woman in Mechanicsburg PA yesterday that allowed her twin toddlers roam around with no supervision. She claims they got out a side door. They finally found the babies wondering on railroad tracks. Her husband was away, so he didn’t know anything about it. If I were her husband, I would divorce her and take the kids away. The husband is a truck driver, and it’s probably safer taking them on his trucking jobs then leave them at home with this woman.
Forgetting to drop your baby at day care and leaving them in the car all day while you work is one (godawful) thing. This “mother” seemed to forget she had a child at all. Eight hours and she never thought about feeding, changing or holding her two-month child? Did she think the Nanny Fairy had come to town?
Alright, how bout an organised, structured, religion(s) that teaches that these things are very wrong. That there will be consequences in the afterlife - not just here on Earth. With others alike who think alike and support each other with strong moral support, love, caring, etc. The religious part - the God part, that your so against, is the backbone of this scenario.
Tell me why that`s wrong and why you mock me.
I never said that her only route to high moral ground was through God, but it is one of the surest and proven.
Apparently, our judicial system hasn`t been effective in putting the fear into people to discontinue this sort of crap.
I never said anything like that. As you said, equal maybe, but I never said better. Why not? Because I don’t think it matters a bit. People shouldn’t need support and backing from others to avoid cooking children. If they’re going to do it, they’ve got problems not the least of which is lack of faith. Lack of basic human compassion, logical thought, and emotion are psychological problems, not religious ones.
Not entirely true. Some pagans and even the Aztecs used to sacrifice humans for religious purposes. That was perfectly acceptable in those societies. Were they all insane?
As Christianity spread, those practices stopped. Or put another way, societies that developed with a Christian structure tended to avoid such things.
So you’re in a position to say your religion is better than someone else’s? Remember that your uber-Christian Republican leader, the President of the United States, comes to us from the governorship of the state known for executing by far the most people in the country when you’re talking about it being wrong to kill or sacrifice in the name of anything. And as far as inhumane practices stopping as Christianity spread, do you really need me to look up cites for horrible things done in the name of Christianity?
I can’t believe whuckfistle dragged the fucking Spaniards (errr. those particular Spaniards at that particular time. Not all Spaniards, you know. Just the ones what wiped out millions of native peoples in the name of God and gold) into the discussion as evidence that a religious society is a good thing.
Way to cut yourself off at the knees.
And that strawman just keeps getting fancier and fancier.
Does anyone think that perhaps Munchausen Syndrome (or by proxy?) has anything to do with this? You know, hurting the child so the mother gets the sympathy?
Troub – Dont bother. Answer this though; would we be where we are as a society (morally) if it werent for Christianity? Would we be further ahead or behind in your eyes if Christianity never existed (Godless). I didn`t say My religion was better than anyone elses, I can only speak for mine.
In your world, you would not have murderers executed? What would you do with them? Are you against criminals who claim to become “saved” while in prison and turn their lives around?
Monty – Ah , the exception-to-every-rule game. Fun stuff
Pepperlandgirl – I didn’t drag the Spaniards into this, Monty did. Smarty-pants. Youve been calling “strawman” for a while now. You havent made an argument for NO religion, only that my reasons for religion arent good enough for you. This isnt really PIT material, since I`m not swearing and stuff. We should be over in GD.
Who knows where we would be. Maybe we would all be killing each other all the time (though doubtful, there are laws against it for other reasons than “it’s one of the commandments”) and ruining our species with sexual diseases, or maybe we would have done away with slavery and segregation long before we did (if it’s even gone yet), and maybe people would be able to marry and share their lives with whomever they pleased. Of course to you, rights for all people might be considered a “moral” step backward. Whatever. It always seems to me that if there were no religion, it would be at the very least one less thing for people to fight about all the time.
FTR, I am pro-death-penalty. I think it has a purpose. I only used it to provide perspective to your “Aztecs killed (sacrificed) their own people!” statement. And as for “saved” criminals. . .I regard many of them with a suspicious eye (I assume you’re talking about violent offender-types who say they’ve reformed). It seems like it’s a good thing to say to the parole board. For some reason “I’ve found God, and commit my life to doing His work” seems to work better than “I won’t do it again.”
Well, except for parts like the Spanish Inquisition, Native American slavery and the witch burnings, that is. For the record, I’m definitely not anti-Christian, but there’s little evidence that Christianity per se promotes civilized behavoir.
OT: I’m not going to defend or excuse these idiots that kill their kids by locking their kids in hot cars, but I’m going to play devil’s advocate (no irony intended) a bit. New parents tend to suffer from severe sleep depravation the first few months. I can see how someone under the influence of sleep depravation, especially someone not too bright to begin with, forgetting they had their kids in the car, or assuming that their toddlers are in the house when they’re off playing chicken with a Westbound BNSF.
Again, this is not to excuse such horrible behavior (for heaven’s sake, hang a sticky on your rear-view member that says “Baby in Car” if you don’t feel that sharp for instance) or sheer stupidity like the wannabe Target employee, but there are all sorts of possibilities that aren’t necessarily related to subconscious infanticide or Godless evil. I do agree “involuntary manslaughter” charges should be imposed on these people, though.
