Another gay man beaten comatose

Well it would have worked out better for him if I would have been a guy. If I stopped desiring men, would that mean I was no longer a heterosexual? I honestly don’t believe you can do anything about your sexual orientation, other than to suppress it or embrace it and enjoy.

MrVisible, You do have a point about holding hands with a member of the same sex. My grown daughter was trying to embarrass me one day and started holding my hand. We got so many dirty looks and “I never’s”. It really did surprise us. We made a habit of it after that. Any day I can make a bigotted idiot feel uncomfortable, is a good day for me.

De nada. Sorry I went off there.

Buy ya a beer next time through PA

When I lived in Lakewood Ohio (supposedly lots of gays there) I saw 2 guys together once in a while; grocery store, street.
One couple held hands, and there was no (as long as I saw) comments.
Its kindof a trendy/left leaning suburb so its more accepted.

This thread reminds me of that old episode of All In The Family where Edith has a friend, a man who dresses as a woman.
In one episode, he and Mike went down the street to the store and a bunch of guys attacked them.
Mike came back but they killed the guy.
Edith didn’t want to go to church after that.

He’s still alive, still in critical condition. There is no progress on the case.

Of course, like so many 21-year-olds today, Mark was banking on not needing health insurance. His family isn’t sure how they’ll pay the medical bills.

Whoever did this not only beat up Mark, they beat up his future as well.

A fund has been established for donations to help cover his care.

Link.

Here’s an update, with a picture of the victim.

Then let me chime in by saying that when you accuse me of denying that gay-bashing ever occurs, you are just as much a hysterical liar as you are when you accuse Scylla.

Same here.

If you got a quote from me saying that gay-bashing never occurs, let’s see it. Otherwise retract it.

I didn’t accuse you of saying it doesn’t occur, I accused you of trivializing it, and you have, for example

Just one of many, many instances in which you dismiss acts of violence against gays or attempt to accuse gay people of doing the same things to straights.

And I fail to get the “hysterical” epithet you like to toss about. I’m saying this in a low, calm tone and looking right at you.

Liar.

And the “hysterical” part comes from the fact that you have no indication that this gay guy was attacked because he was gay, and yet you are instantly blaming me for the attack.

In order to score rhetorical points, as Scylla pointed out, and because you are a drama queen.

Umm, and who’s hysterical? You name-call nicely, but all the “liar, liar” crap is not a refutation of your anti-gay record.

He was a gay man beaten outside a gay bar–seems like the only evidence that would satisfy you would be a signed and notarized confession stating explicitly that the guy was beaten for being gay and for no other reason whatsoever, in triplicate.

Again wioth the hysteria. Nobody is blaming you for the attack–heck, you don’t even live in Tucson, so it’s unlikely that you’re the culprit.

I just think you’re a bigoted jerk who trivializes and dismisses violence against gay people. I don’t care much what you think because your respect isn’t worth having.

gobear, you could have at least made sure you had the names right before you started hurling accusations. I’m not going to weigh in on whether or not Shodan should be mad at you, but Scylla’s anger was definitely justified.

Never start a sentence with a conjunction.

I’m not a grrrl, I’m a MAN! Yeah, I’ve got the balls to kill all the motherfuckers!
Actually, everyone carrying large calibre weapons isn’t a bad idea. The world would be a much safer place. Yeah, I know what summary means. It’s where you take all the evidence and condense it to a paragraph or so. Like a conclusion, or an abstract. You do it right before the execution.

Evidence would be the eyewitness testimony of one person. The accused would be bound and gagged, so he wouldn’t make a spectacle of himself at the trial. The judge would decide, and then somebody would shoot him.

We wouldn’t need any damn Nazis outside the bars! We’d just need special police to catch the people and take them too the trials in the main stations underground.

I don’t babysit, silly. You think Hank Williams, Jr. babysits?

Merely being gay and outside a gay bar is not enough to prove that this man was beaten for being gay.

As was already said, if someone had it in for him for a personal reason not related to his being gay, and he was a regular at that bar, that’s where I’d look for him.

Wouldn’t make sense to wait outside a bar he doesn’t go to.

I’m not saying that his being gay was definitely not the cause. What I’m saying is that there’s not enough evidence here to prove that it definitely was.

But it is enough to make straight supremacism a reasonably likely motive.

Which is what I was lamenting in the OP.

Personally, doesn’t matter to me why this guy was beaten into a coma.

It’s lamentable enough that we live in a world where human beings beat other human beings into comas.

But it does matter to me.

If he was beaten up by a former lover, a drug dealer, a pimp, a secret agent, or a man from Planet Foo, the people I love are not in any danger.

If he was beaten up because he’s gay, then my boyfriend or I may be next on the list. There may be whackjobs running around this city with a young man’s blood on their boots, looking to take out their bigotry on more people who haven’t done a damned thing to them. People they don’t even know.

Even if it’s a particularly addled straight supremacist, my own personal danger level is only up slightly. But we’re pretty out; the whole neighborhood sees my boyfriend and I out walking the dogs every night. We grocery shop together. We go out to the movies. Anyone eavesdropping on a conversation would have no problem telling we’re lovers.

It’s silly to be worried. But it’d be downright stupid not to be prepared. The doors are deadbolted. And the weapons are handy.

Just another fun part of being gay in the US. Nothing like the thought that someone out there who you’ve never met may feel like they’re right to kill you.

With all respect to Mr. Fontes, I hope he recovers, and admits to being beaten up while trying to score crack. That would take the danger inherent in being gay here in Tucson down to its normal yellow level, and out of the orange range.

Why he got beaten up matters. It matters to every gay person in Tucson right now.

I thought this article from Wingspan might be of some interest to those of you following this story.

There’s information at that link on donating to the fund set up for his hospital and rehab expenses.

No information as of yet as to who attacked him, or the reason behind the attack.

Here’s wishing Mark a fast and full recovery. And wishing whoever did this some swift justice and jailtime.
