There’s a little Irish in all/each of us.
Which is correct? I think “each”, but some others don’t agree.
Peace,
mangeorge
If I had to make that choice, it would depend on my emphasis. “All” puts the focus on the group, while “each” puts it on the individuals who make up the group.
That’s the same for me. I lean toward “each” simply because “a little” sounds singular to me.
I’m pretty sure both are grammatically correct; they both parse perfectly well as far as I can tell. I think it just comes down to preference, possibly depending on semantic emphasis as Speaker for the Dead suggested.
I think “a little Irish” is itself grammatically incorrect, since Irish is not a substance that occurs in measurable quantities.
They’re both right.
I can’t imagine how anyone would think that either choice is wrong, so I’ll just leave it at that.
Yeah, it is. Half Irish, quarter Irish, an eighth Irish, etc. Unless you’re someone like Gilgamesh, though, you’ll have real problems being a third Irish.
