I read this a couple of years ago but I can’t remember the title or author. I feel it was something written fairly recently - say within the last five years or so.
It was a science fiction novel about superheroes. Or at least people that had superpowers. The superpowers arose spontaneously as I recall and there was a wide variety of powers.
But in this book, the people that developed superpowers did not choose to use them to fight crime or injustice. Instead they decided that they were the most powerful people in the world so they took over. The really powerful people each had their own little kingdom that they had absolute control of. And the top superpowered people had people with lesser powers who worked for them.
The story was about a group of humans that belonged to the resistance movement. They didn’t have any powers but they could kill a superpowered being with careful planning. The problem was they weren’t strong enough to challenge any of the top powers and there would usually be brutal retaliation whenever they attacked any power.
If I recall correctly there was one superpowered person who objected to the way the other superpowers were acting. He wanted to join the resistance but they wouldn’t trust him if they knew he had powers so he had to conceal his power. But I might not be remembering all of these details right.
I remember reading the first half of the book when I was on a trip but not finishing it when I got home. I was thinking about it today and I’d like to go back and reread it and finish it.
