Another mass shooting in the US (Texas)

NYT says the shooter was Devin P. Kelley, 26.

Devin Patrick Kelley.

Clearly the Irish diaspora needs to be more closely vetted…

Ah, conflicting reports. I’ve heard conservative former bible school teacher, liberal atheist who likes CNN, Muslim-convert, and that his in-laws live in that town so it was personal. That’s just in the comments to new stories, though, not in any news stories I’ve yet read. There really is an advantage to getting information several hours later, after it’s been investigated and confirmed as accurate.

CBS News is reporting:

For those that don’t know, DD = illegal to possess a firearm. CBS could be wrong about the details of his discharge, or he could have been in possession of it illegally.

Press conference starting now.

I just came from another website, and a poster there who said she lives in the region claims that the shooter was married and had two children, and reports as to whether they are still alive are inconsistent. His Linked In page also mentioned that he had taught at a “vocational Bible school” (I think he meant “Vacation Bible School”) in 2013, and there are rumors that he was accused of misconduct of some kind, possible with the children.

That thread included a screenshot from the October 22 You Tube broadcast. All I could think was, “How many of those people had absolutely no idea that their life expectancy would be two weeks?”

this is supposedly a facebook profile photo he shared a few days ago, possibly the murder weapon

It’s really NOT even *roughly *the same part of the state. if you googled the distance between Killeen and Sutherland, Texas, you got about 75 miles. This is Sutherland SPRINGS, Texas, and the distance is more like 150 miles. But speaking as someone who lives about 30 miles from the shooting, we do not consider ourselves in the “same part of the state” as Ft. Hood. You’ll have to take my word for that.

We’ll just need to wait to find out what this was about.

In spite of the media outlets reporting the shooter was this Devin P Kelley, the authorities at the press conference suggested they have not confirmed the identity of the shooter. They did say he was a white male, possibly in his early 20’s. Watching MSNBC and they have yet to say that name. And when I switch to CNN they haven’t reported it either.

Maybe it *does *mean ‘vocational Bible school.’ You’d be trained to fix people’s Bibles when they were saying the wrong things, and explain to the people whose Bibles were so afflicted things like why the four Gospel accounts of Easter morning don’t contradict each other in the least. And they’d breathe a sigh of relief that their Bible was fixed now and working properly once more, pay you your hourly rate, and give you a good rating on Angie’s List.

Did not know that. Where did the name Kelley originate, does anyone know?

Have also heard unconfirmed reports an armed bystander may have shot (or shot at) shooter. Then again, I’ve also heard the police may have shot him, or he may have killed himself. Will just have to wait on info.

Press conference in progress: A neighbor to the church used his own rifle to engage the shooter as he left the church. The shooter dropped his rifle and fled.

The NYTimes reported the name. And now of course both CNN and MSNBC are saying that name. However, at the news conference the authorities declined to give the shooter’s name. Not sure why. The new outlets are reporting law enforcement is the source of Kelley’s name.

And at the news conference they stated a local citizen did confront the gunman as he exited the church and took his rifle from him. The shooter fled and eventually crashed his car. They aren’t sure if he shot himself or was shot by the local citizen.

ETA: what running coach said.

Does this mean the police did not shoot him?

I don’t know. What I understood was they were unsure if he shot himself or was shot by the citizen who confronted him. In the press conference they said this citizen pursued the shooter when he fled in his vehicle. It sounds like they are saying the police didn’t shoot him but that was not stated definitively.

My mistake. From West Texas, you guys elsewhere in the state all looked the same.

Looks like it may not have anything to do with the Fort Hood shooting after all, but if it doesn’t, that’s still quite a coincidence.

Here is a neighbor describing the armed citizen that intervened and his interaction with the shooter.

Well! It appears this story has something for everyone.

The stories I saw said that he crashed his vehicle in Guadalupe County. Looking at a map, Sutherland Springs appears to be at least 10 miles from the county line. If the savior-guy near the church had mortally wounded the shooter, it must have been a wound that took several minutes to do its work.

I don’t have any idea what killed the guy, but it’s not difficult for me to imagine a wound that causes blood loss with Kelley passing out some distance down the road and crashing.
