Another MS Word question: fonts in the footnote

My default font in Word is Calibri.

I’m doing a document in Times New Roman.

I changed the font by hitting “Select All” and changing the font to Times New Roman.

But each time I add a footnote, it’s in Calibri. I have to manually change it to Times New Roman for each footnote.

How do I change the default font in the footnote to Times New Roman?

Which Word version?

If Word 2010, you should make the change to the normal template stylesheet so that it attaches to the document properly.

Change the font in your Default style if you want Times New Roman everywhere. Define a style for footnotes with TNR font if you want this limited to footnotes.

Note that changing your Normal template will change the font for all documents using this template (i.e., any that you haven’t explicitly based on a different template). If you want this only for the one document, change the styles in the document itself.

How do I do that? (Don’t want to change it for all documents, just this one.)

In Word 2010: on the Home ribbon in the Styles section, right-click the Normal style. Choose Modify, then click Format at the bottom and select Font.

This will change all styles in the document that are based on the Normal font, so make sure it doesn’t have unintended consequences elsewhere.

thanks - will try it after lunch.

Or you can just modify the “Footnote Text” style so that it’s TNR. You should probably modify the “Footnote Reference” style while you’re at it, just so everything is consistent.

But yes, the best way is to modify the “Normal” style. That way the entire document will be consistent. You can modify it for just this document, or for all new documents create using this template.

Changing the style just for that document worked. Thanks, all!

Mastering the basics of how to use styles will help make Word a much more useful tool. I am surprised at how many people who use Word daily “don’t have time to screw around with styles” and instead spend cumulative wasted hours hand-formatting paragraphs over and over.

I know. I run into this every day. They don’t seem to grasp that styles are the central concept of Word. And they end up creating twice as much work for themselves.
