Not sure what counts as old timer any more, tbh.

Hi! I’m Tristan. I was a regular poster for quite a while, having joined in 2000. I apparently missed being a 99er by a hair. Dang it.

I hosted a truly awful dopefest in… gosh, 2005? I think? In Sacramento.

I was fondly remembering one of my favorite posts, the “If LOTR Was Written By Other Authors” post that went viral being viral was the term used, and decided I would see if I could resurect my account.

I haven’t been here, it seems, since 2013. The list of Doper names I recognize in the memoriam post is …shocking, and saddening.

So, any others left that may remember me?

If not, just say hi. I have no idea what the SDMB culture is like anymore, so in some ways I’m new.

We’re still nerdish. Especially for Professor Tolkien. We mostly nice though some posters bark loudly.
We less misogynistic, but still working on that part.

I would expect nothing but a healthy foundational layer of nerdery. This new board is going to take some learning, but I’m gonna put in the effort.

I remember your name, but that’s about it. Heck, at my age, even remembering that is an accomplishment! I joined just a bit before you did and I think what I notice more than anything is that we’re mostly an older group here. Or maybe I just interact with the geezers.

I thought you were part of the Ent Moot in 2008, but I just checked and it doesn’t look like you were.

Yeah, it’s always been a bit more civil than other forums. I think it’ll be a better outlet for me as Reddit is making me an alcoholic.

Tristan was my name when I was in the SCA, and this is the only last vestige of that life left.

The thing about old timers’ names is there are some that you simply haven’t thought about for eons… you don’t necessarily even realize that they’ve been gone so much as “out of sight, out of mind”, until one day you see that username and go "Hey wow, WTF ever happened to Tristan? • do a search • whoa, not since that long ago?!?

I’m a newbie from 2003. And I too was gone for about 3 years ending about 6 months ago.

I remember you and your story. I’m sure we’ve had a back-and-forth on various somethings.
