Another Quitter...lookg for Wellbutrin/zyban experiences

Hey all, I’m doing the quitting thing. My doctor prescribed Wellbutrin instead of Zyban so my insurance would pick up the cost.

ANyone here used it? I’m on day 5 or 6, and at the moment I feel pretty icky. Id ont’ know if the Wellbutrin is the reason, but I can’t think of anything else. I just feel…icky. Slightly nausous, maybe mildly spacy, even, possibly, depressed?

I’m also bummin’ because I specifically scheduled this so I would quit smoking AFTER this weekend, when mys ister has planned a blowout in Vegas for all of us for her 50th birthday. I knew Vegas after a few weeks of quitting would be a bad idea…but now I just realized that if I’m taking the Wellbutrin I shouldn’t DRINK! THAT blows!

So anyway…tell me what you know about Wellbutrin: side effects, personal experiences, mixing with alcohol, success at quitting…

Thanks

I can’t figure out why your Dr. is giving you Wellbutrin to quit smoking. I used it as an antidepressent. I think thats why they say don’t drink, depressed people don’t need the booze. Check with your pharmacist. I was told drinking wouldn’t hurt me, except for the underlying depression. It worked pretty well for quite a while, but after a recurrance it wasn’t as effective, which is a common problem for me.

Zyban is Wellbutrin - they are the same substance. The different names are used to indicate the different purposes. My doc used the drug name rather than the anti-smoking name because under the name Zyban insurance companies won’t cover it.

Which seems a bit stupid, since people who have stopped smoking are likely to cost the insurance company alot less in he long run than smokers…

well, I’ve never heard of insurance agencies described as incredibly intelligently operated. Nor, for that matter, have I dealt with a real native human being at any I have spoken with. They all appear to be part vampire, or something.

Anyway, the wellbutrin did it for me. I kicked the habit with no problems. I felt a bit confused the whole time I was on it, and I definitely lost a lot of my competitive edge. Perhaps I am the odd case, but my libido took a dive as well.

However, I can now run the bases at full speed and not vomit from hyperventilating afterward.

It works.

See sig for details…

As was said, Wellbutrin is Zyban is Buproprion HCL.
I was on Wellbutrin for ADHD/depression for a few months and in general I don’t recommend it, but if it helps you quit smoking than go with it.

It changed my whole personality and made me numb to the world. My friends and family didn’t want to be around be because they said I became cold and distant. But I was on a heavy dose.

I took it for three weeks and, sadly, didn’t do a thing for me.

Next stop: (When I feel ready again.) The patch.

I think the dosage is smaller as a smoking ceasation aid than as an antidepressent. It didn’t work for me. I had mild but annoying side effects, vision, a cold feeling in my face like eating ice cream. I quit when I had surgery. They wouldn’t let me smoke for three days and they gave me heavy duty drugs. The nurse does not like for you to say f–k, but if you say it loudly enough and frequently enough, she will give you morphine.
