I have another question to everyone: what exactly should be done when an illegal is found?

You sell the lie that it’s someone else keeping them down, and it’s only through the graciousness and generosity of government programs that they can rise above their circumstances. Bullshit, you asshole. All your approach will do is keep them suckling at your collective teat of entitlement programs… which may be exactly what you want.
Actually, you were talking about illegal immigrants and used an extreme example to illustrate your point. I used less extreme, common-sense examples to demonstrate that your point was not without merit.
In most circumstances, they should be returned to their country of origin. Just as in most instances prostitutes should be prosecuted for prostitution. However, if a person shows up at a hearing on sex workers and says “I am a prostitute” she should not be arrested solely based on that statement; same for illegal immigrants.
See, pk, sometimes things exist which we would prefer did not. And sometimes we want to learn about these things. Mere testimony from an illegal immigrant seems like a pretty good way to eradicate ignorance, even if one disagrees with the recommendations the person might make.
You had your citizenship already and undocumented labororers work their asses off as well.
What would you have done if you weren’t handed citizenship? You can’t make a valid moral comparison between people who start with that advantage and people who don’t.

My dad didn’t have his citizenship handed to him. He managed to obtain it legally. He didn’t start with that advantage, and yet he managed to get it without breaking the law. Why do you assume I’d have done less than my father’s example?
Perhaps because those “conservative values” are what screwed over El Salvador, and that if your father hadn’t been able to enter this country, you’d have been worse than “very poor.”
I don’t assume anything, I’m just saying you had an advantage over people who didn’t start with citizenship so your Horatio Alger story is not proof of your moral superiority over undocumented workers.
If getting citizenship legally was really a valid option for most of those workers, they would be doing it. The reality is that it is not a realistic possibility much of the time and their kids are hungry now.
Would you break the law (in a way that does not involve violence or theft or any victimization of other people) to feed your children or buy them medicine? Or do you believe that it’s ethically better to let them starve or die than to illegally cross a border and pick some strawberries?
Most likely, these drug dealers and illegals were offered deals by the prosecution in order to gain their testimony. Happens all the time. They probably agreed to fix things for this guy so he could stay in the country, or merely look the other way so that he would agree to be a witness.
Would you explain to me how your going to find out someone is an illegal? A statement of admission is a good place to start, and that’s what this guy did. How else would YOU suggest we detect illegals?

So you believe that the law should be enforced only if the violation has a direct impact on you? Does that include all laws, or only the ones you agree with? Whatever happened to this being a nation of law, with democratic processes to change laws we don’t like, but to enforce them until repealed?

This was a hearing not a court trial. Nobody is invited, it’s open to the public. This guy just showed up, and when his turn came up he spoke. When he stated that he was an illegal the proper thing to do would have to have the Capitol Police meet him in the hall as he left and have them contact INS. Once INS is contacted it is up to them to decide what happens next. Sometimes they do nothing, it’s true.
But at very least the process should have been started.
This was a hearing about fighting illegal immigration, after all!

And after he said it he could have been picked up in the hall on his way out. I’ve been to these hearings. Lots of them. Almost everyone gets to speak. And the Capitol Cops, if not in the hearing room, are standing right outside the door. What’s the problem?
If you really think that your circumstances growing up, being dirt poor notwithstanding, can be compared in any possible way to growing up dirt poor in El Salvador, than your conservative little ass is way farther up your Walmart-poisoned colon than I suspected.
Plus, I wish to say that I am highly amused at what you were able to read into my post. Nowhere did I say anything about race or that people of color aren’t allowed to be conservative. My observation about what tune you’d be whistling if you were still in El Salvador was merely that: an observation,and a cogent one at that. I dislike conservatives of all colors, not just white.

If your dad hadn’t gotten his citizenship, do you really think you’d be sitting down in El Salvador saying: “Geez, I’d like to go to the States and have a chance to live a life that offers a chance out of stunning poverty, but it’s against the law, so I’ll just stay here and suffer?” Me neither.
One last thing: my initial point wasn’t “open the doors and let em all in, god bless em,” it was referring to the bald-faced hypocracy of blaming and punishing the victim while the fat cats get fatter off of the fruits of the illegals’ labor. I’ll say it one more time: if you really want the illegals out, make it so it’s not economically feasible to hire them. If they can’t find work, they won’t come. End of story. But we couldn’t do that, see, because then your bag of prepacked salad mix or your tomatoes or strawberries would cost 4 times what they do now, and your restaurant meals, the same, and janitorial services, child care, etc., the same, but godammit, why should those uppity illegals expect ANYTHING, they don’t even belong here!
