It’s actually the best suggestion you will ever hear.
The operative word is TRAINING.
But let’s consider an alternative approach. Instead of arming the teachers/staff, how about the school districts start hiring some of our returning veterans, commission them as school police and put two or three in every school?
That doesn’t even rise to the caliber of idea. It’s simply stupid. In the heat of the immediate moment, you might believe schools are active combat zones, but the fact remains that they are not. Also, school districts already hire people with training for law enforcement. Now, that is a credible idea.
I don’t think you can be locked up for threatening to shoot someone. I believe they can get a restraining order against you, but that is about it. I know cop shows are not wholely accurate, but that is a premise at some point on most cop shows (the not being able to lock someone up for threatening you).
Thanks all for dispelling my ignorance. Adopted, both adopted parents died. Taken in by friends. Sounds like he had several strikes against him. Not making excuses for him or suggesting anything bad about “orphans.” Just observing that IMO I understand why there may have been less “home” control than in other family situations.
We’ve discussed this ad nauseum countless times before, yet I see no attempted change towards even partial solutions. I favor SOME DEGREE of added gun regulation/enforcement, and am very open to discussing what specific form that ought to take. And I admit I am ignorant about SO MUCH involving firearms.
I see the 2d Amendment - and the well funded NRA as HUGE impediments towards any rational, even limited changes. Instead, I expect gun rights supporters to say something like “Arm the teachers.” Personally, I’m pretty much resigned to the likelihood that our society is content to accept some considerable number of gun deaths occurring regularly, and I simply trust in numbers to hope I’m not unfortunate enough to be in the wrong place each time some nut goes off.
IMO, gun policy is definitely NOT an area at which America is anywhere near the best it could be. But - obviously - many people disagree.
A start. I think you’ve touched on something here. The 2nd amendments talks about the right to “bear arms”. “Arms” is defined as “weapons”. So let’s discuss some “weapons” in light of the classic pro-gun argument:
Nuclear weapons don’t kill people. People do.
C-4 explosive doesn’t kill people. People do.
Hand grenades don’t kill people. People do.
So by the definition of “arms”, I could argue that by my 2nd amendment right I should be able to possess any one of these. But I think very few (not absolute, I know there will be some who would insist) would agree that I should not be able to go to Plutonium R Us and purchase a nuke. So to expand on Leo Kupke’s “limits” argument, perhaps the place to start is to not single out “guns”, but to refer to “weapons” in general.
And if we do this, we can then apply some “measure” of “killing potential” (note: intentionally using this term over “damage potential” so as not to sugar coat the meaning) as the potential for fatal injury over some period of time. When the number of injuries is over some threshold over a relatively short time period, it then equates assault rifles with hand grenades. But excludes bolt action rifles, or revolver handguns. So we now have a means to 1) distinguish between guns with the potential for mass killings, and 2) legally confiscate such “weapons” that fit this criteria. By the same reasoning/logic that says it’s okay to possess firecrackers or M-80s, but not to possess C-4, we can now begin to round up assault weapons.
I do agree that it’s the controller of any weapon that is the more important aspect. And that raises the whole issue of how to improve mental illness monitoring and aid. But if we can at least remove the tools ANYONE can have access to, it’s a start.
No. Many Hispanics are totally white (of European ancestry). “Hispanic” just means the surname is of Spanish-language origin. You have a whole country in Europe of Hispanics that is mostly white–wait a minute… what’s it called? Oh, right “Spain.”
There are many Mexicans, too, who are totally white (of European ancestry). It’s the same throughout Latin America.
Sweet. Then let us never hear of Hispanics counted as anything but white at this board ever again. I don’t give a rip whether they are considered white or not. I do object to the classification shifting as convenient for the axe being ground.
You know what? When I have some personal issues that take mostly away from the board there is always hope that things will go smoothly. I guess not. This should have been a breaking news thread where people could discuss new information about an important event as the facts come in. Those posters shouldn’t have to sift through the 1,000th gun control debate or discussions about if Hispanics are brown or white. Whatever. It’s in the Pit now. Call each other fucktards if you want. If anyone wants to start up a thread in MPSIMS about the facts of this case feel free.
Loach, this is *not *just another isolated incident in a continuing stream of isolated incidents, with no common themes. It would be silly to treat it as if if were. It is entirely appropriate to discuss it in terms of the mass shooting epidemic in general, and its causes and potential mitigations.
If you’re all that fucking *bored *hearing about people getting killed and people wanting to fix the problem, that’s too damn bad, frankly. You’re part of the problem. Now step aside, please, and get out of the way of the solvers.
Loach: I appreciate your frustration, I really do. I just want to say, as one who partially contributed to the political sidetrack, that I was aware of what is often an intent to keep such threads in MPSIMS to strictly a factual breaking-news discussion, but the fact of the matter is that it turned political almost immediately (with post #3, not that I’m faulting anybody – this is a very emotional issue). I and many others were simply responding to the political gun-control theme that had already been in progress, unchallenged, for quite some time, which led me (and I’m sure many others) to believe that this was an acceptable theme of discussion in this thread. I myself didn’t get involved until post #75, and that was a response to something that had been posted much earlier that I felt was just blatantly stupid.
So, while I fully understand why you moved the thread and sympathize with your annoyance, if these political discussions weren’t appropriate here perhaps a mod should have issued explicit instructions to that effect much, much earlier. The fact that no one did seemed like tacit approval.
You know Starving Artist, one thing that amuses me about your whole “The Fifties Were So Wonderful and Innocent” schtick is that even if we take that to be true, it ignores what went on before the 1950s. People definitely weren’t so sweet and innocent back then. You should hear some of the stories my relatives have told me.
Why do you think they called it “the Roaring Twenties?” Or look up what went on during “The Gilded Age”.
Yes, I’m aware that this will probably sail right over his head as usual. To quote Simon and Garfunkel:
All lies and jest
Still, a man hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest.
You think you’re a problem solver? An rage-filled, dishonest dimwit like you? Your posting history here is little but one, long raging scream from a braindamaged chimp. My guess is that you have a PFA against you in real life. It explains a lot of your history here. Your belief that everybody is “one bad day” from committing murder…your belief that nobody can be trusted with a weapon…your total inability to simply state that you would never harm a child…You’re more than enough of a simpleton that you’d think since you are like that, everyone is. So who filed for the restraining order? Were you beating up a wife/girlfriend/boyfriend? Did you turn that ugly temper of yours loose on somebody at work? Did you slap somebody else’s child for, somehow, setting you off? Maybe a road rage incident? You have a record, I’m certain of it.
You not only aren’t a problem solver, you are such a colossal asshole that you undermine your side of the gun debate so thoroughly that you are an asset to my side. There are gun control advocates who are ready to have a calm, reasoned debate on the issue. You fucking well aren’t one of them. You and your fellow angry retard Siam Sam do more to ensure gun rights in this country than an extra thousand NRA members would accomplish.
In a way, that’s the worst thing about these mass shootings in which innocent people are slaughtered. All the threads make the board feel so cluttered.
