I posted a few questions on different boards and in most cases got satisfactory answers.
On a couple of occasions,though, the answers/recommendations I’ve received weren’t completely satisfactory.
Now those threads gone way down (second or third page),
chances for me to get more attention are pretty bleak.
How do I go about resurrecting those treads without abusing the board ?
I’m pretty sure that dopers are capable to find the correct answer, provided
my questions had more exposure.
Should I just keep posting irrelevant/clarifying comments to get my tread on top ?
Should I forget about it because people aren’t interested to reply anymore?
Should I assume (unthinkable !) that no one knows the answer?
What should I do ?
Resurrecting months-old threads is frowned upon, but if it’s just been a few weeks, I can’t see anyone getting upset. I would suggest that you rephrase or clarify your question, since you say the answers you got were unsatisfactory. Or you could reply to the answers that you feel are lacking with follow-up questions.
I suppose it’s possible that the answer you want doesn’t exist. Or that the Doper who knows won’t see your query. Life’s like that sometimes…
I know that in my case (which I have no reason to think is either typical or otherwise), I’m not a big thread-starter, but those I do start seem to achieve some sort of medium trajectory. They seldom sink like a stone, and they also don’t tend to reach the dizzying heights of a ten page epic. What they do tend to do though, is sink for the first day, and just when I’ve declared them dead, they’ll come back and get two or three pages of replies. But there is definitely that initial delay. So don’t give up hope. Keep plugging away at the SDMB, and even if you lose a thread or two, it’s no criticism of you.
In Cafe Society, it is all right, as long as you are posting a meaningful response on the topic (not “I agree!”).
Outside CS, if the thread is old, it is best to open a new thread and link to the old thread. Again, you should have a new question or different comment. If you just want to post a little quip or something, too bad, you missed it.
I’d suggest simply waiting until the question has fallen off of the front page of the forum list and resubmitting it without a link to those prior unsatisfactory answers. The thing is, many of your best answers come right away on a new thread. A low answer count attracts the serious investigators, those people who will gladly search out things for you that are hard to find.
But once a couple of fuzzy-minded posters have tried to convince you that you don’t really want an answer, as in your case, the thread becomes worthless and should not be linked to.
