Oh, at the end of the clip, Joaquin was very quick to get to his feet, take off his sunglasses, and shake Dave’s hand and start talking to him. This clearly indicates to me that he wasn’t on goofballs or being an ass, it was definitely an act.
That’s the bit that sticks with me as well.

He was probably contracted for promotion as well for the film, which means he has to do interviews and present clips and hype the movie on shows like Letterman to a certain extent.
People watch interviews on teevee with celebs and think they are seeing “the real thing” and in large part people didn’t like this interview because it wasn’t “the real Joaquin”, but really televised interviews are all part of the job and both the interviewer and the guest are performers who are doing just that.
