Does Joaquin Phoenix have a history of mental illness?

(Take 2)
I’ve never really followed his career, however a recent blurb on salon.com made me wonder if he has a history of mental illness:

Other posters in a previous thread have suggested it may be due to substance abuse, and Salon alludes to a possible breakdown of some sort.

Mr. Phoenix (not me) is drug free and has no mental illness. He just doesn’t feel the need to conform to the “Hollywood” type.

Who knows. Maybe he just likes to act like he’s not all there for kicks. Or maybe he really does have a few screws loose, or inhaled too many bong hits the day before.

Given his family history I wouldn’t be surprised if the latter were true. (Obligatory disclaimer: Of course, it’d be terribly sad and tragic. Just not surprising.)

So if someone has a person in their family that did/does drugs, you think that means I do drugs, too.

And you can say that with such certainty because… ?

I saw him on E!. Mr. Phoenix doesn’t do drugs or eat meat or any animal products. He is pure of body.

Horseshit. Everyone said the same thing about poor River. Even to this day, his family STILL denies he had a drug problem. I love Joaquin, I think he’s a fantastic actor, but he comes from a VERY messed up family (his mother is batshit insane and still insists River was a messiah sent to earth).

I think he’s got some issues he needs to work out. And yes, he has been in rehab for alcohol abuse. It’s not too much of a stretch to think he might be abusing drugs, given his family history (not only River, but their father is a drunk).

You are misunderstanding.

Like I said alcohol is not a drug and doesn’t get you high

Like fudge it’s not.

He’s got nothing on George Clooney, who is so non-conformist that he actually conforms to the “Hollywood” type, thus “Hollywood-serving” all of the non-conformist celebrity types.

Arguable. And it depends on what your definition of “high” is, but when I drink I get fucked up, plain and simple. I suspect that he is about as pure of body as Sam Kennison.

River was also a vegan who denied ever having done drugs.

E!, Entertainment Tonight and most other entertainment channels aren’t exactly hard hitting investigative journalists. They work very closely with the publicists of the stars. It’s not at all uncommon to see an at home interview with a “couldn’t be happier” celebrity couple who file for divorce the week after the show airs or hear stars blather on and on about how they chose to do The Munsters Go to Cleveland because of the artistic challenge and the chance to work with Frankie Muniz’s cousin Pee-Wee or other nonsense.

I have no idea and don’t particularly care if Phoenix does drugs, but if he doesn’t then he needs to (prescription psychotropic ones, that is). The man comes across as either drugged up or insane on interview programs and either way it’s safe to say he needs help.

Does anyone have any real evidence Mr. Phoenix does drugs? Or do yust assume because he doesn’t fit the mold?

No one is saying yes, he does drugs-we’re saying it’s a possibility, because he’s acting very strange.

What a silly thing to say. You’re diagnosing him and perscribing drugs based on interviews? The man probably gets asked the most inane, idiotic and boring questions over and over and over and over again. He has a great (though twisted) sense of humor, and I think it’s hilarious when he gives bizarre answers to flummox interviewers. Yes, he does come from a crazy-assed family, but from where I sit he looks like he’s come out of it all with his head on pretty straight.

And he’s a brilliant actor, which, since I don’t know the man, is really all I care about.

So not being able to answer when asked what his birthday is, being either completely non-responsive or completely incoherent during interviews (even as an adolescent), and described as seeming miserably unhappy and bizarre by interviewers is all part of the persona and not a deeper seated mental illness similar to his hospitalization for chemical dependency and complete breakdowns on sets (during one of which he banged his head repeatedly on the floor til it bled [his head, not the floor, though that would have been impressive indeed]). Hmm. Bit of the Andy Kaufman in him, I suppose.

[Church Lady]Well… aren’t we superior and special?

I’m fascinated by the cult of celebrity. I freely admit it. I don’t stalk them or think they’re better than most people or should be held as moral examples or any of that, but they’re fun to talk about and obviously I’m not alone in so thinking or they wouldn’t be so incredibly well compensated.

[Hijack]Nothing against you personally, but I get increasingly irked at the number of people who come into threads that ask in the Title “Is Anderson Cooper Gay?” or “Is Mason Reese a Suicide Bomber” or whatever and make the “Celebrities are just people, mm-kay… I just like to watch them act”. Fine and good, just watch them act, but let those of us who wish to discuss them do so without being a killjoy. (And if you [the generic you] aren’t interested in their private lives, why did you [the generic you again] come into the thread? You should be as disinterested in it as I am in a thread about college football.) [/Hijack]

Why does no one point out that the Phoenix kids spent their formative years in the Children of God- many members of which (including the founder, the late “Moses” David Berg) have been accused (with some justification) of pedophila? Now, even assuming the Phoenix brood was not involved in that aspect of things, there is enough weirdness in the COG to account for some emotional idiosyncracies any of them might display.

I have never heard anything amiss about Sky tho.

Actually somebody did. This thread has an odd history- it started yesterday, was quickly derailed due to some “Noble” comments, then disappeared (after I had made comments on the Children of God cult ties), then reappeared, and the weird thing that I’ve never known to happen in SDMB history since I’ve been here is that even on my post history it is as if the first incarnation of this thread never was.

C.K. DEXTER HAVEN HAS STOLEN MY P-A-A-A-A-A-ST!

Well **Dex]/b], what say you?

Two threads I participated in recently were “disappeared” by management. Very peculiar. Didn’t we used to simply close threads that were riddled with trolls and/or inappropriate behavior?

Tuba emailed me and told me they were hiding the original thread due to some comments that had been made and invited me to open another one. So this is try two, which is why some of you are having deja-vu over it.

I never would have thought such an innocuous thread would spawn such problems!

He’s definitely got some kind of issues:

Oprah says he was ready to vomit when she interviewed him.

Scroll down and read. I hope he gets help and does NOT end up like his brother.
