Another what can happen because of a medical condition question

I had an appointment for an eye exam last Wednesday. I thought I would need a bit stronger prescription for glasses and this happened. The doctor also found something else he had never seen before in previous exams. He said I have a torn retina in my left eye. I am going back in a couple weeks for a more thorough exam. He asked if I had suffered any eye or head trauma recently, the answer was no. He said 2 things could happen after the next exam, my eye would look okay and no further treatment would be required or I would need treatment which would happen almost immediately. I have read there are two treatments, one with a laser or freezing the area of the tear. Both result in scar tissue that should help with the tear. Other than needing glasses, I have never had any other issues with my eyes. I have a couple questions. If anyone has had treatment for this, what was it like? Will this treatment result in needing a different prescription for that eye? I have a new prescription and really need a new pair of glasses but I don’t want to spend the money on new glasses if I might need another new pair in the near future.
