Has anyone here had laser treatment for diabetic macular edema?

My main question is threefold: first, was it focal or grid laser?

Second, can you see the scotomae (burns/laser damage), and have you had any other side effects like loss of colour/hue, permanent blurred spots, etc?

Third, did you try any treatments before or afterwards, like steroids or vitreous fluid replacement?

(Fourth, how do you deal with the crushing depression of going blind?)

Thank you.

I don’t know this treatment, so I can’t tell you anything. But I’m sorry you’re going through this. You’re in my thoughts.

I’ve had several laser treatments for retina tears. Is the procedure similar, or are there any questions I could possibly help with?

I don’t know. I don’t believe the treatments are similar; I know they create burns around the tear.

I work in ophthalmology, mostly in the retinal field, but IANAD/N. This is not even resembling medical advice.

I think vitrectomy is done mostly if there’s hemorrhaging into the vitreous gel, plus the recovery time on that is (to the best of my knowledge) pretty long - at least a week or two face-down for 99+% of your day, including during sleep when possible.

Laser seems to be standard of care, though which version I don’t know. Triamcinolone injections have side effects like glaucoma and cataract, though those may be counteracted with more meds, or more surgeries.
