Another "where was that photo taken?" thread

A stock photo* in an unrelated article.

I’m 90% certain it’s European (the car, the arcade, the tower).

I recognise the tower, but can’t place it. I initially thought from the faintly Germanic styling that it was Bruges - it wasn’t.

Any ideas?

ETA: *copyright someone or other - just in case…

Almost certainly northern Italy. Compare the tower with the tower in Siena’s main square, or the tower of MacKenzie Castle in Genoa, or the tower in the old plaza in Florence… The colonnaded walkways are also consistent with northern Italy, and the weather, too.

In fact, it’s a view of the Palazzo Vecchio (old palace) in Florence from Piazalle degli Uffizie. See here.

EDIT: Here’s the best view. You can just make out the archway on the left hand side half way down the street. The square patterning under the windows is also evident, as well as the same style of colonnading.

Aha, nice - it’s almost certainly the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, taken from the street running away from the building in this pic. And here it is in Google Street View/Panoramio.

ETA: damn, had the post open for ages while I did some work before I posted it. Glad we’ve come to the same conclusion. Thanks!

Florence.

I knew I recognized the tower as Italian of some sort, but the snow threw me off. To be sure, I ran the picture through TinEye and got this page describing the scene (in Estonian): a big snowstorm covering much of Europe in 2005.

Edit: The original AP wire report that the picture accompanied can be found on this page, about a quarter of the way down.

What’s nuts for me is that I see that photo - and I’ve been to Florence, Siena, Venice etc - and the first thing that pops into my head is “I’ve seen that in Assassin’s Creed 2”

I thought the exact same thing.

I know that tower! It’s in Weehawken, New Jersey.

And I thought “Project Gotham Racing 2.”
