another "white" Oscars - does it matter>?

If white engineers are predisposed to hiring only their white buddies but they tell everyone who complains about it that they are only hire the best candidates, then there is a major problem.

And that’s what’s wrong with the Oscars. It’s a popularity contest masquerading as a merit-based competition. The popularity is heavily skewed towards white people, telling white stories. But when people complain about this, instead of getting an honest answer like, “White people prefer white people, sorry!” they are told “You aren’t good enough!! Try harder next time!!”

Hell yes it’s racism.

One day I am going to start a tech company. And only hire black people / women / whoever for 50 cents on the dollar and rake in the money.

And the winner for The Most Perplexing Non-Sequitur of the Year…

Same for me, except that they included a line that had me scratching my head. Apparently, in the books Jack Reacher is a mountain of a man, like 6’5" 275lb of pure muscle, with a resting face that looks like he wants to literally rip your arms out of their sockets.

In the movie, the cops are looking for Reacher at a motel and ask the front desk about him. Possibly involving the anecdote that he could kill a man with one punch. The line that had me scratching my head was something like “You’ll definitely know him if you see him.”

Uh, yeah, no.

Something like 2/3 of the movie goers in the US are white. Around 10-11% are black. The rest are mainly Hispanic and other races.

Discriminatory practices are permitted when hiring actors, primarily because of the bona fide occupational qualification. If the role calls for a white male age 35-45, then they are permitted to select under that criteria. Screenplays and scripts are selected for production that studios believe will sell tickets. Remember the audience breakdown above.

Interesting story that is part of what’s been talked about in here.

And here.

I hear they’re trying to get Tyler Perry to play Liz Taylor in that.

I would see the hell out of that. I actually like Tyler Perry movies and his TV shows. House of Payne was a great sitcom.
