Anthony Robbins: Guru or Fraud.

OK. For those of you who have gone to his seminars. Does he whip you into a feel-good frenzy and then pressures you to take an advanced motivational seminar, at a greatly advanced price? Does he rely on unpaid volunteers to do most of his work? How much do his casettes really cost (my guess is way too much).

My basis for him being a huckster was that he flaunts his horribly opulent lifestyle, something that minor millionaires who intend to stay that way would never do. “Look at my castle, I worked hard for it.” WHat did he do before being a motivational speaker?

I’ve read one of Tony’s books and got my hands on some of his tapes.

He amy or may not be a “fraud”. He’s made a fortune out of what he does, so he is obviously very intelligent. And he is a very gifted speaker and salesman.

HOWEVER . . .

I do remember watching him on Larry King Live with Tommy Lasorda and some other “motivational speakers” and some woman called up, crying becasue her daughter was sick or died or somethin and saying she was going to commit suicide.

While the other guest tried to consol the women, Robbins goes off on a spiel about how the woman needs to implement “new strategies” to deal with the crisis.

Meanwhile I’m sitting here watching this shit saying, **"DUDE: THE WOMAN IS ABOUT TO KILL HERSELF.

SHE NEEDS A HEADSHRINKER AND SOME VALIUM, NOT YOUR GODDAMMNED MOTIVATIONAL SPEECHES!!!**

In my opinion I really have little or not interest in hearing what a professional “Motivational Speaker” does or says.

Give me a motivational speaker like . . . Trump. Gates. Case. Someone who has actually accomplished something in the REAL WORLD.

One thing I’ve always wondered about motivational speakers is how come they can’t get a real job? What sort of occupation is ‘motivational speaker’ anyway? It all just sits really badly with me. Something doesn’t add up.

Especially since in the end, these speakers aren’t qualified to actually do anything other than get paid too much and get free international travel and talk bollocks in a happy excited voice.

So, then, who would win in a fight between: Anthony Robbins, the Landmark Forum, and Lifespring?

Ugh. I only lasted about 15 minutes in a Lifespring seminar that a friend dragged me to before I was motivated to get up, leave the room, and go straight to the Hotel Bar.

TR fraud or guru?

Neither. IMHO

I’m just going to ignore you now, because having a discussion with you is like herding cats - Rousseau

Anthony Robbins was on Conan O’Brian’s show last night, and he was pretty funny and self-deprecating. Not Guru-like at all.

He told the story of one woman who told him, “I see your show almost every night.”

He replied, “Lady, it’s a commercial. I hope you’ve noticed by now that the guests don’t change.” Then he said to Conan, “But it’s still kicking the ass of your show.” Pretty funny.

I hate to admit it, but in 1988 I … uh … I not only attended a Lifespring Guest Event at the urging of some of my friends, I signed up for and went through the entire Lifespring Basic Training course. (I did not go through the Lifespring Advanced Course as my friends had, though.)

6 years later, I met up with someone who wanted me to go through the Landmark Forum program. I kinda went like this at her:

That’s a very nice story, dhanson, and I think you’re a very nice guy. . . . . . .for me to poop on.

Yet to be reconciled with the reality of the dark for a moment, I go on wandering from dream to dream.

Quit humping my leg.

I see my thread is talking Lifespring. Yes, back in 1991 I went. It was Wed-Sun. Made it to Saturday and walked out. They gave me a refund for 1 day. Before the seminar I asked about hazing. Of course they said it did not happen. I spent the next 3 months calling that 1-800 number until I got a full refund. Yes, a for profit (and many non-profit) organization(s) that collects unbeleivable amounts of money and does not pay its workers is likely fraudulent.

My company paid for a “motivational speaker” to give a presentation at our yearly sales meeting.

I immediately pegged him as a fraud when he started spouting off some of the same gimmicks that I’ve seen these guys do before, kind of like watching a comedian do the same routine that another comedian does.

He did the “elephant in Denmark” gimmick. He did the “write one down ONE GOOD THING” that happened to you today, pointing out course, that people are always negative, and we are really nothing but complaining losers.

In addition, there was the usual annoying “interactive” activities that I really could do without.

But the best part was him telling us how he looks in the mirror every morning and repeats catch phrases to himself. Boy, what a joy this joker must be to live with!

But I concluded he really was a fraud when he started hawking his crummy books and cassette tapes.

Never once did the guy tell us what he has done for a living besides giving “motivational speeches”. He told us he has a “business.”

I suspect his business is . . GIVING MOTIVATIONAL SPEECHES!!!

Sounds like that character on Saturday Night Live who’s in perpetual 12-step programs. “…And by God, people like me!”
