I remember once the media tried to make up a story about an anti-gay rights Republican guy trying to get blown in a public bathroom, but as it turns out, the guy was NOT seeking glory hole action, and only had a wide stance. It’s a common misunderstanding. Sometimes when I see a guy with a wide stance, I think, “Is he asking me to blow him?”
He went to a nightclub for his secret gay affair? Isn’t that why God invented Craigslist?
What I wonder is - who is having sex with all these guys? You’d think it would be harder to get laid than that when you’re a well-know anti-gay crusader.
My guess? Something like: “I have worked long and hard to fight Teh Gay for my entire political career. I can go to this nightclub/have an affair/whatever, and I’m still doing far more good than harm on this cause - I’ve earned it.”
And in that sort of thinking, he’s far from alone. DC’s own Marion Barry, whenever he gets into trouble - as he just did - always protests that he’s working hard for the poor constituents of his ward. Put aside the question of whether or not it’s true - the point is that he believes it, and I suspect that’s how he convinces himself he’s a good elected official in spite of being fantastically corrupt.
But… what do they think being gay IS, then?
It doesn’t. Being sexually attracted to members of the same sex and not to members of the opposite sex is what makes you gay.

Well certiany tnhe DUI and having an adulterous relationship, man or woman, is something you would apologize for. And while being gay is not a crime, you may feel the need to apologize for lying to your family.
I think the answer lies in the fact that they are so closeted and self-deluding. They have spent their lives denying who they are so when the suppressed urges finally snap them they have no idea how to find a little man-love on the low-down.
They don’t have access to knowledge about Craigslist, the internet etc… They think “Where do the gays go to meet each other? I know, I’ll go down to that Gay Bar ™ I pass on my way home from work every night”
Then they drink too much and get a DUI in a state vehicle. This is where the line between hypocrite and idiot is drawn.

Well, it could well be that they’re bi. Or horny enough to close their eyes have sex with someone they’re not attracted to. That’s certainly happened plenty of times.
But if you are willing to risk your entire reputation and career for a little man-on-man action, I’m thinking you’re probably, actually gay. In the homosexual sense. Not so much in the yippie, hoorah way.
Which is why, when you’re getting blown in a bar parking lot by your rough trade male companion, you should picture some sweet-ass chick with big jugs so you’re not, like, a fag.
Being sexually attracted to other men. Just having sex with other men is a way to stay true to their marriage vows, and not be sexing up women they’re not married to.

Well, when it comes right down to it, the internet isn’t all that different from a gay bar anyway. After all, they’re both a series of tubes.
My guess is the anti-gay zealots who cruise think everybody feels like they do - everybody is tempted by gay sex.
They just gave in to temptation - just like lots of people know they shouldn’t steal, or drink too much, but sometimes just give into temptation.
Thieves think everybody’s a thief. Liars think everybody lies. Everybody thinks the world thinks like they do. I think Ashburn thinks everybody is tempted by big sacks o’ man meat - I mean, who wouldn’t be? - but don’t get caught, or are better at resisting temptation.
So to him, being gay means thinking there’s nothing wrong with gay sex. As long as you recognize you shouldn’t have gay sex, you’re not gay.
Sadly, I think that some in this position live with themselves by going back to work as a legislator, and being very, openly, ANTI-GAY. This insulates them in their minds from what they did.
“I can’t be gay, because look at how much I hate gays!”
It also helps explain people who are anti-gay, but somehow think that being gay is a choice. “See - I’m choosing not to be gay, even though I have sex with men occasionally, and think about sex with men all the time. I hate gays!”
Catching, not pitching. At least, in some cases.
