Any cites proving Superman isn't jewish?

There was a scene in “Man of Steel” in which he was talking to his Christian pastor.

If that’s not deserving of a slow clap, I’m not sure what is… well played.

Among comic book superheroes? Not too many. I was able to come up with Captain Marvel, the Flash, and Wonder Woman.

He was celebrating Hanukkah, but with his Super speed he can celebrate it all in one night.

American Flagg!, who was also Jewish in the continuity.

Nothing about Superman was intended to be Jewish. In 30s American, Jews were not common outside of the big cities; most Americans never knew anyone. There was also still plenty of antisemitism. A popular art form like comics would avoid any Jewish characters (like they’d avoid Black characters) for fear it would hurt sales.

Only the Luthor on Trial story was from the 1960s, when it was getting more liberal. And Eichmann was in the news.
If you want a Jewish superhero, there’s always the Dynamic Duo of Batmitzvah and Robinowitz, created for a satiric magazine in the 1960s. I can’t find a single reference to them on the internet.

In response to the OP, there’s always this SAturday Night Live sketch about Kevin O’Donnell’s question “What if Superman were a Nazi?”:

Never heard of 'em, but I remember Batmensch and Rubin.

Are you saying not ever, not in 75 years?

Kevin O’Donnell or Michael O’Donoghue? :dubious:

So? Before he learned his true heritage, Moses must have received religious instruction from Egyptian priests. Not his fault that he strayed from the Jewish path.

Superman was obviously intended to embody many Jewish virtues. But as comic book loving Hebrew, I say he’s not one of us.

For a very long time, the only super heroes who were Jewish were members of the diversity bunch. DC’s Seraph of the Global Guardians ( a group featuring super beings from all around the world) was Jewish. Marvel’s Sabra, the official super heroine of Israel on earth 616, was a Jew. Kitty Pride of the X Men was a Jew. I have an issue where she tries to fight off Dracula with a cross. He laughs, says ‘that only works if you believe’ and grabs her. Then, Drac burns himself on Kitty’s Star Of David.

For decades, there was debate over whether Magneto was Jewish. We knew he had barely survived Auschwitz. But as a blue eyed, white haired man it wasn’t clear he was a Jew. The debate went on even in the Marvel offices. Some editors and writers claimed Magneto was Romani (what used to be called gypsy). Some said he was a Jew. It was only fairly recently that Magneto was acknowledged as a Jew. He went so far as to claim that previous revelations that he was Romani were a ruse.
The ever loving blue eyed Thing was ALWAYS meant by Kirby and Lee to be a Jew. But, a a previous poster has said, you didn’t see depictions of Jews in comics in the early years. Ben Grimm originally had a clay like appearance. He bore a striking similarity to the golem of Jewish legend. Kirby even did a drawing of the Thing wearing a yarmulke, tefilin, and tallis. He kept it on a wall at home and proudly showed off the Jewish hero to visitors. BUT, either nobody told later writers or they disregarded the information. Later stories show the Thing going to confession and attending church. A few years ago, the Thing was restored to Judasim. Michael Chiklis can be seen wearing a star of David in the Fantastic Four.

On a final note,

One incarnation of the Grass Hopper ( a member of the Great Lakes Avengers) was Jewish.

“This place should be unguarded! I used to work here and know that Roxxon gives all its security people Christmas off!”

“Yeah? I got two words for you pal- happy Hannukah!”

I don’t think that Kitty Pride was part of “the diversity bunch”. Her schtick was never “She’s the Jewish X-man”; her schtick was that she could walk through walls.

And you go on believing something he didn’t say. This is just bizarre.

I can vouch for the fact that the current evangelical climate is to make an exception for Jewish people. Muslims will go to hell unless they are converted, but Jewish people may possibly be saved once Jesus comes back, if they choose to accept him as their long awaited Messiah.

This has nothing to do with telling Jewish people who they should like more, nor with saying how more liberal Christianity treats Jewish people. Personally, I’d go with the liberals, since they tend to see you more as human beings, while evangelicals see you as a means to an end. At least, on an institutional level–individuals are, of course, individuals.

The Evangelicals of my parents generation ‘loved Jews’ because their Bible, which they regarded as definitive, told them that the ‘Jews’ were God’s special people.

They may have supported Zionism because of Millennialism, but, like many Jews of their generation, they didn’t confuse Zionism with pro-semitism.

Since I am not located in the USA, I will accept your suggestion that the term ‘Evangelical’ now means something different than it did when I was a child.

Note that our fellow Red Sea Pedestrian – and classic Superman author – Elliot Maggin wrote as if Lex Luthor is a non-observant Jew; it may never come up in-story, but he’s always thinking it when plotting the guy’s actions or having him talk up Einstein.

Don’t forget Colossal Boy!

He is parting the sea in this pic.

It’s a metaphor. Or maybe it would be more accurate to say Supes is a metaphor. It’s an apt one for a lot of reasons, but the “Superman is Jewish” thing was never intended to be a statement about the character’s cultural background or beliefs or religious practices.

How is Supes the hope of his people? Other than Kara, any time he’s in the vicinity of another survivor, a fistfight breaks out.

Can you provide a cite proving Hitler said that?

Even if you can’t, I won’t be too worried since it’s clear to me that he was a raving lunatic and was progressively growing insane until he died.
