Any cultures that find eggs disgusting?

Over many threads it has become apparent that many eastern cultures find the western taste for dairy to be unappetizing.

I wondered if there are any cultures that find eggs (bird) to be unappealing?
Or are eggs universally liked?

IIRC, from The Seven Pillars of Wisdom, it’s considered somewhat shameful for an Arab to stoop to eating eggs. I have no idea if this still holds true, if it ever did.

Having been served eggs by Arabs I can say it certainly doesn’t appear to be true now.

Though I had scrambled eggs in Jordan I susspect that was to cater to western breakfast ideas, I don’t remember there being any egg based local foods. Maybe its just that if you want something non vegitarian to eat you would only have eggs if you couldn’t afford meat.
Paging Paul in Saudi incase he does vanity checks.

There is a sect of Hinduism that finds eggs to be quite disgusting. Jains won’t eat them, they’re extreme vegetarians, but I can’t remember if they are the only one or there are others.

And when I say disgusting, I mean, they can’t touch them or they have to go cleanse themselves.

Upon reflection, I think it is not Jain, (who will not eat eggs) but another sect which finds them actually disgusting.

The one egg dish I know that is popular in Arab countries is tajîn, which is practically the national dish of Morocco, and is also found in Algeria. Tajîn is similar to the Italian frittata or Spanish tortilla (which is a big thick omelet-like affair that has nothing to do with the Mexican corn tortilla). If you subtracted the cheese and bacon from the French quiche, it would be sort of like that too.

Of course, it’s Berber cuisine. But Arabs in those countries like it too. Most of the Arabs there are a bit Berberized, just as most of the Berbers are Arabized.

I know several Hindu families that do not eat eggs.

No, I’m pretty sure you’re right. Jainists are extreme vegans and won’t eat anything that they consider too violent, even including root vegetables.

Davidson’s The Oxford Campanion to Food makes no mention of any society adverse to eggs. He does mention several ancient Arabic methods of egg preparation.

It is not possible to live a complete and cultured life without this book.

Oz Nomes.

(I just finished reading Ozma of Oz to my 8-year old son.)

Sorry for the hijack, but this thread immediately reminded me of Angel Heart. In one scene, Robert De Niro says something like, ‘Some cultures believe the egg symbolizes the soul.’ Then he eats it. I’ve always liked that scene.

Not as much as you think. Dairy is very common. *Drinking Milk *(past childhood)- is outside the culteral norm in some parts of asia, yes.

Yogurt is more common than you think, along with Ghee, and Kumiss. There are other products, and cows milk isn’t the only “dairy” you know.

One odd thing I noticed is that the Japanese consider eggs to be mainly a dinner food, whereas Americans consider them mainly a breakfast food.

When I lived in Qatar there was not only a very large egg aisle at the supermarket but a section of that aisle maked “SPECIAL SAUDI EGGS,” which I took a photo of for the obvious reason that it was so odd. I imagine they meant “high quality” as opposed to “special,” but you get the idea.

I was served eggs in dishes that were omelette-like and crumbled hard boiled into a breakast casserole of sorts the very few times I had breakfast at anyone’s house.

Don’t forget also that North Africa has had a heavy French influence the past couple of centuries and this includes large numbers of yummy bakeries, with a lot of cake treats which require eggs in the recipes.

I know the Jains won’t eat it, but I don’t think they find it so much actively disgusting as just plain wrong.

There is another, minor, sect of Hinduism that has to cleanse themselves if they even so much as touch one.
