Any Doper ex-dippers?

I’ve been “chewing” for about a year now, but prior to that I had smoked for about 5 years. Although I don’t continue to smoke, clearly I haven’t kicked the niccotine habit. I’m glad I don’t smoke–the smell and the whole idea now disgusts me–but I’m afraid of getting mouth cancer and (perhaps more importantly to me at this stage of my life) losing my teeth or having them become disgusting.

I remember having read somewhere at some point in my life that there is no way to quit smokeless tobacco. Although I don’t remember where or when I read this, the phrase has always kind of stuck in my mind. Weeks ago I bought some Commit lozenges to try to kick the habit, but I haven’t even opened them up. I’m pretty scared of trying to quit, but I’m also scared of the dangers associated with continuing the habit (plus, it seems that more people here in the northeast feel that the habit is more disgusting than people would, say, in the south).

So, as the subject suggests, is there anyone who has successfully quit the dip? It is possible, right?

Not sure if it helps, but my brother had been chewing for some time, I think around a year. He also smoked at the same time (for around two years). He was able to quit both cold turkey. I think it depends on the willpower of the person, but I’m sure for most it definitely gets harder to quit the longer you’ve held onto the habit.

That said, please please please try to quit. Give the lozenges a go. I was always worried that my brother would develop some type of cancer if he continued his habits. As he replied “Not everybody who smokes or chews gets cancer” which is valid but on the same side, most people who’ve gotten cancer this way probably didn’t expect that they’d be the unlucky ones. On a more physical note, watching my brother spit that nasty stuff into a bottle alone was enough to drive me out of the room. Spitting it on the ground was even grosser. I couldn’t decide which I would rather have him do- chew or smoke- because both were equally appalling in their own ways. I was so, so happy when he quit both on his own.

I hope you at least give quitting a try!

I used to dip for at least 7 years. I followed this up with another 7 years of the harsher Indian tobacco. I finally stopped, but need the 4mg Nicotine gum. It’s been about 5 years since I transitioned to the gum. I just may need the gum for the rest of my life. It’s expensive, but I think it’s worth it.

My big problem was that without nicotine, I would be extremely tired all the time. I also need nicotine to go to the bathroom in the morning.

How could that possibly be true?

had a can a day Copenhagen habit for over 20 years when my doctor and dentist finally got through to me about the dangers. Took about a year of weaning myself off, but it worked. Was a shaky first 6 weeks without any, but took to chewing gum for the interm, and it worked. Cannot stand gum now, go figure. It can be done, best of luck.

I used smokeless tobacco, yes. Off and on for slightly over a decade, before I finally managed to give it up for good. I spent about a year on the nicotine gum trying to get free of tobacco (which is how I got introduced to nicotine, by the gum. I never smoked tobacco, but I tried the gum out of curiosity and progressed to chew). I managed to give the gum up finally, thanks to the IV nitro I got for my heart attack, well over a decade ago now.

So, perhaps trying IV nitroglycerine might work for you?

I’ve kicked morphine, alcohol, pot, and nicotine. Nicotine was the toughest.

I used snuff for about 25 years, going though a can of Copenhagen every three or four days. I tried to quit unassisted a couple of times and actually succeeded once. Inexplicably, I went back. I had no medical or dental problems associated with the use, and no social problems either, as I used so little at one time that one could not tell I was using it at all (no lip bulge, spit, etc). I finally quit in August 2004. I found it was not as difficult as I had remembered, in that I used herbal snuff as a replacement. The stuff I used is available here http://www.smokeysnuff.com/. I don’t even crave tobacco any more, so I’d say the stuff worked for me.

I dipped at least a can of copenhagen a day for nearly ten years, started when I was 15. I quit a couple of years, mainly because my office job prohibited it, my wife didn’t like it so much and I could no longer stand the thought of what it was doing to my teeth and gums. It took a few months to finally quit for good.
