I’ll be up that way in August sometime, joining my gentleman friend while he does his reserve duty at Wright-Patt. Usually this involves him working and me sitting in the hotel room being bored. Anyone have a suggestion for fun things to do on a Saturday afternoon or evening?
I am. I live in Miamisburg actually.
If you like history and aircraft, and since you’ll be right there anyway, The US air Force Museum is the largest aircraft museum in the world. They are actually adding on to it right now. I really enjoy it but I’m a history nut.
If aircraft isn’t your thing, there isn’t a lot of stuff in downtown Dayton, unfortunatly. On the outskirts there is the usual collection of shopping strips, malls, and bookstores.
If you are willing to travel some you could head down to Cincinnati and see the zoo or cross the river and see the Newport Aquarium.
Ditto that. I spent a month on Wright-Patt because the nitrate vaults for the Library of Congress are there, but I have to admit I was holed up in my hotel room whenever I wasn’t on base (though my Masters Thesis may have had something to do with that, too. Hmmm…)
I grew up in Bevercreek and still visit frineds there regularly, so I might be able to point out a thing or two to do.
Real quick, I suppose, there is the Oregon District downtown (Dayton, not B’creek) and there are a lot of bars, clubs, resturants and stuff…even a comedy club (Funny Bone, IIRC). Ohio’s largest Guiness account is there, a place called The Dublin Pub which has some of the best food I’ve had in a while, always has a crowd and usually has a Celtic band/group. WPAFMuseum is pretty impressive, too, as is DAI (Dayton Art Institute.)
Beavercreek, right near WPAFB and Wright State, has a new mall, The Mall at Fairfield Commons and there are many places to eat, shop, etc. there, all just a couple of years old, so they’re fairly nice.
Out towards Yellow Springs, you’ve got Young’s Dairy and Haha’s Pizza plus a real live hippy town that is still almost all hippies. It’s pretty relaxed out there.
Drop me an email if you’d like more info.
