Any experiences with DMT?

I recently watched DMT: The Spirit Molecule, a documentary, and Enter the Void, a trippy arthouse flick about a drug dealer in Tokyo who smokes some DMT and gets shot. It’s gotten me quite curious about the stuff* - I’ve done other psychadelics (namely shrooms and LSD), but DMT was never on my radar in those days.

*No, I’m not asking for tips on how to procure it; just interested in people’s experiences with it.

I haven’t done it but became very intrigued by both films. DMT had very little to do with the overall film in Enter The Void but still left an impression. My only curiosity about the DMT doc was it was sort of hard to figure out what was fact and what is theory in it.

Well, it was the visualization of his trip right after he smokes it that really interested me most (plus there was lots of nudity in it - I liked that too).

My past included many dozens of trips on LSD and shrooms, mostly LSD. I only tried DMT once. It was a quick trip and very intense. I didn’t have a lot of visuals with it.

Did it really feel quick? In some of the interviews in the film, as well as some supplementary things I’ve read, they talk about the time distortion effect and how although it only lasts about 15 minutes, it can feel like much longer.

I’m inclined to believe this since I’ve experienced similar time distortion on acid - I remember a particular trip where I looked at the clock and noted the time. Then, an hour later, I looked again and saw that 5 minutes had passed.

Long long time ago – somewhere in the 60s – a very trippy short trip.

I remember going in the bathroom and becoming intrigued by how deeply the toilet was breathing. Sat down and watched the walls and tub breath much more deeply than they did on acid. Started discussing the breathing things with myself, then started discussing (with myself) whether or not I was discussing things out loud and if I was, was I being too loud. Went to bed and fell asleep.

Afterward, the fact that I was unable to determine whether or not I was talking out loud deterred me from further experimentation. All in all – peculiar, memorable, not unpleasant, but far more out of touch with reality than acid.

That didn’t happen to me. I suspect that I didn’t get a very strong dose.

I smoked crystal DMT once before. It was sort of indescribable in the way that psychedelic experiences tend to be, but if I had to choose three words they’d be: crazy, weird, and bonkers. Also very short, maybe 5 minutes of peak effects, I was completely “normal” within 15 minutes of exhaling.

Note that DMT ingested in an ayahuasca-type brew (DMT plus an MAOI to prevent it from being broken down in your body) tends to produce longer, more “spiritual” experiences.

Check out Erowid for more info than you ever wanted.

I smoked some 5-MEO-DMT, which I’m told is very similar to DMT. I took a hit, and the whole world slipped away as I exhaled. All of my senses were replaced by a dream-like visualization of a 3D grid going on forever in all directions. It was weird and intense, but not scary.

When I came back to reality, I felt very good. It was like the feeling after a car crash, once you realize you just cheated death.

In the early '90s, I brilliantly chose to take a hit of DMT in a swimming pool, after hours, after climbing a fence with friends. I “flew” around the pool for a while until it dawned on me that all the fairies who were playfully flying with me were laughing because the stupid mortal forgot that he needed to breathe.

Glad that worked out!
