I just got a Wii and I am hesitant about shelling out $50 for a game that all I know about it is from online reviews. So there is Gamefly, the Netflix of video games and I am wondering if anybody else has any experience with it, good or bad?
I did it for a while back with my PS2. It was the same time I was using Netflix and the similarities were such that I worried about putting the wrong disc into the other’s envelope. It was nice. because I could play the simple games that have zero replay value and beat them and move on without the huge financial commitment (Rygar, for example).
I just got my Wii bundle delivered today and after I played out all of the games ad nauseum, I planned on signing back up with gamefly.
Loved the concept, but it was just. too. damned. slow. In a one-month trial subscription, I was able to get two games, with an average trip of over a week to get from me to them and from them to me. I think the last game I got from them took something like 11 days from when they shipped it to when it showed up.
I guess it depends on where you live. I used Gamefly for about a year and a half, and was always pretty impressed with the turnaround. New games would almost always arrive 3-4 days after the last one was sent back, at most. Of course, I live probably less than an hour from their shipping place, so I guess maybe it’s not a fair comparison. But since the OP lives in L.A. as well, they’ll probably have similar turnaround times to me.
Overall, I really had a good experience all around with Gamefly. They had a pretty good selection, and there generally wasn’t too long of a wait, even on new releases. I never had a problem with a game not being playable, whereas I had to return Netflix discs for being unwatchable (scratched to hell) on several occasions. This kinda surprised me, because I’d expect these game discs to be mishandled by younger children more than dvds. Maybe because Gamefly is smaller, they’re able to have a better screening process of the discs? I don’t know.
The only reason I stopped my Gamefly account was because I found I was getting newer games less and less… World of Warcraft has been taking up most of my gaming time lately, so I really wasn’t getting my money’s worth out of the Gamefly account. But if my gaming changes, I’d happily start the account up again.
