I recently (last weekend, in fact) was lucky enough to have picked up an Xbox 360. My wife and I talked it over, and rather than add to the small pile of games I already own that I don’t play, we decided to give Gamefly a shot.
Can anyone tell me how it works for them?
I’m eager, and interested, and it seems for the price of a game, I can pay for Gamefly for 3 months or so (1 game at a time plan) and this seems like a good deal taking into acocunt the way I play games and such.
Or is it a terrible business with horrible stories and all that good stuff?
Frankly, given the shipping time and cost it wasn’t worth it for me. Are you the type who goes through lots and lots of games every month? If not, you won’t get your money’s worth, it’s better to just buy a budget label game every month or two.
Plus, after I cancelled and shipped back the games, one didn’t get there in their planned window (very short) and they charged my credit card for the game. Though they got one back, they said they didn’t get the other one. They were in the same envelope (though in different, labelled, sleeves!) It was a big effort to get my money back and they weren’t very nice about it.
Actually, I am the sort of person who picks one game, plays it for a couple of months, and then don’t play it very often at all again, if at all.
The shipping window thing is troubling… was it a window to get their games back after you cancelled the service, or a window to get game backs in general.
You should have this moved to Cafe Society if you want more responses.
I tried it for a month and canceled - they have one shipping center (in Southern California), and it quite simply took forever for the games to get to me and back to them. I managed to get one game in the month period - it took a week and a half to get to me and almost two full weeks to get back to them - and I returned it the NEXT day after I got it because I had just wanted to check it out!
Gamefly has long shipping times because unlike Netflix it doesn’t currently have as many distribution centers. However they recently opened their second distribution center in Pittsburgh, PA, so customers east of the Mississippi are getting much faster deliveries now.
I’ve been tempted try Gamefly since I tend to like games that are sometimes “too obscure” to be on the shelves at the local rental places, and I tend to play one game a lot then never play it again (making me wonder if $60 to play a 20 hour game is a waste of my money.)
Martin- That’s pretty much the rationale I’m using. I’ll check out those other sites as well. Being practically IN Pittsburgh is a big attraction for me…
Mods, if one of you wants to kick this over to Cafe Society, I’m ok with that idea…
Buy the games. Unless you go through at least one game a month it won’t be cost effective for you.
Ironically when I cancelled my account I had Gears of War and Dead Rising, both games I liked so I decided to keep them. Well the day after I cancelled I beat Gears of War, and then before I had a chance to play Dead Rising again, my wife got it free from work along with Lost Planet because she was working on a game that will be coming out called Dark Sector.
I ended up paying like 90 bucks a piece for the two games over all.
