I have long been a fan of Vincent Gallo the filmmaker, but have just recently begun listening to Gallo’s recordings. I remember enjoying the soundtrack to The Brown Bunny, which Gallo singlehandedly composed and recorded, so I checked out some of his other songs. I found them to be quite good, really.
The song that I liked the best was Lonely Boy. His voice is just so haunting and the fact that he is singing slightly out of tune makes it even more so. The melody is very stirring and the light piano and guitar in the background flow beautifully. Also, the loose rhythmic structure combined with the slow pace is very unique.
Another standout is I Wrote This Song For The Girl Paris Hilton. An instrumental with no words, the song builds on the repeating loop of a gently blown note on a tenor saxophone, then delicately layers on guitar and organ.
Are there any other fans of Gallo’s music here? If so, what are your favorite songs and what do you like about them?
