Well, even Burger King has better fries than In 'N Out. When people have to special order them (well-done, Animal Style) to make them remotely edible, you’re doing something wrong.
We just got a Five Guys in the spring; I tried it out and it was ok. Don’t see what all the fuss is about.
They do give you a metric ton of fries. And an extra scoop on top of that.
(Actually the amount of fries they give you is excessive, IMO. While I appreciate the attempt at providing value, it’s really just wasteful for most customers.)
5 Guys is great because of the toppings…you can dump jalapeno, pineapple, olives, and bacon for a goo-fest-nirvana burger. If you can still detect the patty, you’re doing it wrong ![]()
Ack! Where do they do this?
I’ve heard people say that McDonald’s has the best fries.
McDonald’s fries are barely food. If you don’t wolf them down in five minutes they go cold and have the texture and flavor of literal shoestrings.
They’re disgusting.
The church of barbecue has many schisms. I am ecumenical. It’s all good.
I don’t care if you prefer chile con carne or chile con frijoles. Both are authentic Mexican dishes. But “chili” is a gringo misspelling that grates on my nerves.
If it’s on a flour tortilla, then it’s not a taco. It’s a burrito, or a fajita.
Every cooking show I’ve ever seen and also tons of cooking/recipe websites(like this one). It’s a travesty.
How else do you cook artichokes? I hope you’re not discounting steaming, which is superior to boiling, but I can’t think of a third way. Grilled? Never tried it.
I mostly agree on the cutting, except that it’s allowed if and only if it aids in laying it flat while cooking, which sounds like what they’re doing in the recipe. Otherwise I’m okay with being trusted not to poke myself. Scrape it out? People do this (not clear what they’re recommending from the posted recipe)!?!? It’s like butchering a pig and throwing away the bacon!
Actually, neither one is. It has been pretty well settled that what we refer to as “chili” is American, not Mexican.
As for tacos - Mexicans would disagree with you.
The correct answer for chili is with beans. Also, if you have the time, the beans should be purchased dry and soaked yourself - precooked canned beans don’t adopt the flavors as well as a good long simmer from raw. I’m also a bit confused as to why beans would have a brand, and am unfamiliar with what Camilla brand would be, but if they start raw they should work.
After all that, I’m pretty flexible about what kind of bean, and will mix and match. Pinto and Kidney are both fine. There will need to be onions, ground beef, and a significant amount of heat.
Oh, and:
- artichokes should be dipped in melted butter
B. Pineapple is an excellent pizza ingredient - I’ve never actually been in an area that had both an In & Out and Five Guys in proximity to one another, so I haven’t had to choose. They’re both way up on my list if I’m in the mood for a fast food burger.
D. Cheese should be kept away from apple pie.
E. Corn tortillas > flour tortillas, soft is easier to get right. - Raisins in Oatmeal cookies. I’ve seen chocolate chip oatmeal cookies, which was okay (it’s hard to go wrong with chocolate) but that’s just not the right combo.
That seems to be a pretty standard reaction for some people trying 5 Guys or In n Out for the first time. I just think their expectations are set too high, or they have a different idea of what makes a great fast food style burger. I think both are pretty much perfect examples of the style.
As for me, In N Out over Five Guys. Not only do I like it better (and, as I’ve said many times before, it’s the quintessential fast food burger), it’s also a couple bucks cheaper than Five Guys. Five Guys does have fantastic fries, though. Thing is, I don’t need a bucket of fries with my burger, so I never get them, anyway.
This is pretty much how I feel. Eat what you want. Eat it how you like.
Except steak. There is one way to cook steak correctly, and that is medium rare. And there are two kinds of steaks: rib steaks, and strip steaks. All other parts of the cow are beef but not steak.
Recently? I first had this discussion 3 decades ago on my first west coast trip. Pineapple does not belong on pizza.
I must assume that you have never had true NYC pizza. Even the $1 slices are superior to any chain’s offerings.
No ketchup on dogs.
No raisins anywhere.
The only miracle about Miracle Whip is that they haven’t gone out of business.
Most, if not all, BBQ is good.
“Texas” chili may not have beans, but beans are fine in chili.
Cooking over high heat and adding bottled sauce is not BBQ, it’s grilling. I’m looking at you, Aussies!
I hold the above truths to be self-evident. I have spoken, let these feuds be forever ended.

That’s pretty much true of any fried food. You have about a 5-10 minute window to eat it from when it turns from nirvana to disgusting crap. While I prefer skin-on fries, McDonald’s really does have the best skinless thin-cut fast food fries in the business. They’re just beautiful out of the fryer. No condiments except salt needed.
Really? I’ve had really good pizza in NYC, but I’ve also had a ton of truly shitty pizza all over the city. Most of them I paid more than $1 for. I’d happily trade in most of those wedges of hot garbage for Pizza Hut.
I’ve pretty much given up on ordering them. They can be really good, but they have to be fresh and more importantly the oil they were cooked in has to be fresh. 90% of the time they taste rancid to me. I don’t know what changed because I used to love them. But I’ve given up.
For a just plain good fast-food style burger, my go-to would be Rally’s/Checkers. And they also have the best fries. They’re also one of the cheapest fast food options, due to low overhead (no indoor seating).
Oatmeal raisin cookies are OK, but oatmeal chocolate chip is a lot better, and raisins always disappoint me by virtue of not being chocolate but looking sort of like it. I think the only plain oatmeal cookies I’ve ever seen have been the ones from the end of a batch of one of the other types, that missed out on getting any of the brown bits.
And Tex-Mex is a perfectly valid kind of Mexican food. Just because we went and drew a national border down the middle of the Rio Grande doesn’t mean that there’s a discontinuity in the culture.
Price is better for sure, and re the fries comment, I am ordering them less and less often with meals these days.
They don’t have relish, mayo, and catsup? or DIY solutions a no go as well?
