Any game *hint* sites around anymore?

I’m playing through a bunch of old NES and PC games ('cause I missed them the first time 'round), and the old man in Zelda is too cryptic for me. Secret in the nose?:confused::confused:

I can search for “zelda hints” and get loads of hits, but what they actually are are straight-out walkthroughs. That’s not fun. It’d be nice to have something like the old Universal Hint System, where you get progressive hints before it straight-out tells you.

The UHS site doesn’t look well trafficked. Is there something replacing it these days? Should I not bother, and just post my questions here?

Without spoiling, half the hints are useless. “Secret is in the tip of the nose”? I’ve beaten the game I know not how many times and am still not sure just what that means.

“Digdogger dislikes certain kinds of sound” is only useful if you know what a Digdogger is.

Other fun clues from dungeons include

“Tenth enemy has the bomb”

And my number one contender for most useless hint

“Go to the next room”

That’s what i used to use like 5-8 years ago when I played games. It varies from game to game, some have pure walk thrus others have helpful guides, and others just have cheats, but usually it’s well organized.

It refers to there being a secret passage in the top right room (“the nose” - the dungeon is shaped like a face in profile).

Which you do if you’ve read the manual. Moreover, Digdogger is the boss of the dungeon you get that hint in.

It’s a hint that you should go to the next room (that is, not the one you just came from). Really, most of the hints are pretty straightforward.

This, however, I have no idea about.

To respond to the OP: no idea where to get just hints. I usually look up a walkthrough and try to find only the specific piece of information I’m after, but that’s pretty suboptimal.
I suspect the decline of game hints is related to the decline of games where puzzles is the main game play element (adventure games).
