My kiwi plants are leaking water.
Not sap, water. Like . . . a lot.
I’ve got a couple of plants that have never fruited, but grow profusely, so I have to prune them back quite savagely every so often.
Although I’ve had them for about 7 years, and have noticed wet patches around them before, I only just realized that some of the cut vines have been dripping water constantly.
I’ve read that this can happen with grape vines, and that it should stop by itself after a while, but these plants seem to keep dripping water for weeks or even months.
Anyone ever had this happen? Any suggestions?
I’m wondering if I should try to seal off the cuts with some wax or sealant, or maybe twist some wire around the cut ends.
That water may be tears, your vines may be lonely and pining for a mate. Perhaps that’s the reason you’ve never harvested any fruit.
Is this truly a constant drip of fluid, or is it merely drops of fluid exuding onto the edges of the leaves( a condition called GUTTATION) The plants may be trying to stabilize their internal pressure(turgidity) by getting rid of too much fluid. Over-fertilization is sometimes a factor.
Cute.
But I have both a male and female plant, side-by-side.
I’ve never tried manual pollination, so that may be why I’ve never gotten any fruit.
It’s not the leaves that are weeping, it’s the cut ends of vines I’ve pruned back. Not all cuts, though.
And it’s a constant dripping, like a leaking faucet.
I don’t over-water them, and the problem can’t be related to over-fertilization, since I almost never fertilize them (which is probably another reason I don’t get any fruit).
Dunno, not had it happen from mine. From all I can find in my pruning guides and stuff, they just say leave it, trying to stop the dripping can cause more harm than it cures.
When are you pruning? If you’re hacking it back when it’s in growth, that may be the problem, try pruning in winter when it’s dormant. If you are pruning when it’s dormant already, then I dunno.
I tend to just hack them back whenever they get too out of hand.
Most recently I had to cut them back to re-roof the car shelter they’re growing on, and we’re in spring now, so bad timing on my part I guess.
I’ll leave them alone and try to mend my pruning habits to winter.
Thanks for the advice.
