Kiwi horticulture

Last summer I planted three 2-foot kiwi vines (A male and female Actinidia arguta and a female A. arguta “hardy red”). The hardy red climbed about 8 feet; the other two, about 4. They’ve all wintered over and are leafing out. I didn’t prune them (other than clipping out little snags) because my understanding is that they eventually fruit on older wood, and I’m trying to get some height on them so their eventual weight will be supported by the trellis.

That’s the extent of what I know. Anyone grown kiwis, particularly in the Pacific Northwest? Should I fertilize them? Anything else? Do deer eat your kiwis? Thanks.
