I’m not a big labeller, but sometimes I wonder. Is there any genre name for sorta cutting-edge, hip-hop and sample influenced rock, but that’s more melodic and less street-oriented and dancy?
When I give an artist list you’l probably realize there are lots of similarities:
Beck
Sugarcubes
Citizen King
Gus Gus
Fun Lovin’ Criminals
Stereo MCs
i have no idea what to call this. other than good, of course.
Trip Hop?
Of course, Beck has a new sound now. He can actually sing, what do you know.
I really don’t know what to call this, but I wouldn’t say trip-hop. That always has more connotations with the Bristol scene - Portishead, Massive Attack, Lamb etc. than the artists you list. All Music Guide offered “Experimental Rock” but that’s so broad that it can apply to almost anything.
I think we’ll need to invent a name. Something really ridiculous.
I propose hip-rhop. Or Nu-roots.
