Hey, all. I’m doing write-on for law review this week, and I could use some music to be lawyerly by. Anyone know any good songs about lawyers? Or, failing that, do the LawDopers have anything they particularly enjoy listening to while they Bluebook?
The only two that come to mind are Lawyers in Love, by Jackson Browne, and Lawyers Guns and Money, by Warren Zevon.
Good ol’Willie Nelson:
“Mommas, don’t let your babies
Grow up to be cowboys.
Let’em be doctors, or lawyers, or such…”
Jamie by Weezer
Lawyers, Guns, and Money By Warren Zevon?
Lyrics
I hate bluebooking. I used to be awesome at it; people used to grovel at the throne of my bluebooking. But then I got rusty (and I got minions), so now other people bluebook for me.
Music: I agree with my learned brother Northern Piper; there’s nothing like Willie Nelson to motivate. But I tended to go for classical (“O fortuna” by Orff, “Dies Irae” by Verdi, Prokofiev’s “Battle on the Ice,” stuff like that – really loud and obnoxious stuff).
Good luck with law review; I hope you make it.
Thanks, Campion. And thanks for the suggestions, all.
Not strictly about lawyers, but related:
Sue Me, Sue You Blues by George Harrison
This Song by George Harrison
Haitian Divorce by Steely Dan
I Swear by John Michael Montgomery
D-I-V-O-R-C-E by Tammy Wynette
I Fought the Law by The Clash
*Sue Me, *from Guys & Dolls.
*Samovar the Lawyer, *from A Day in Hollywood, a Night in the Ukraine.
Would the theme songs of JAG or Law and Order count as a lawyer song?
If so, Fred Steiner’s *Perry Mason * theme should surely count.
Sing to the tune of “So Happy Together”
“Imagine me as God. I do.
I think about it day and night.
It feels so right
To be a federal district judge and know that I’m
Appointed forever.
I was anointed by the President,
And revelation told him I was heaven-sent.
And Congress in their wisdom granted their consent.
Appointed forever.
I’m a federal judge
And I’m smarter than you
For all my life.
I can do whatever I want to do
For all my life.
****
Even at the very worst,
If you take me up to get reversed,
You’ll have to get the circuit court to hear you first,
And that takes forever.”
Suboh v. Borgioli, 298 F. Supp. 2d 192
Andrew Bird, that made my day.
What, no love for Dave Frischberg?
OTOH, from here, we learn that Frischberg didn’t intend for it to be a song about lawyers.
A lesser-known, but delightful ditty by Al Stewart
“License to steal”
He walks into the room
He’s got a briefcase like a bomb
A smile on both faces
And he call it aplomb
He wants a bite of your apple
Hands you back the peel
He’s fresh out of law school
He’s got a license to steal

The Legal Ramifications of a Crackerjack Vendor Who Works in Yankee Stadium by Christine Lavin
Philadelphia Lawyer by Woody Guthrie.
From Billy Austin, by Steve Earle:
“I didn’t even make the papers
'Cause I only killed one man
but my trial was over quickly
And then the long hard wait began
Court appointed lawyer
Couldn’t look me in the eye
He just stood up and closed his briefcase
When they sentenced me to die”
Don Henley “End of the Innocence”
When happily ever after fails
And we’ve been poisoned by these fairy tales
The lawyers dwell on small details
Since daddy had to fly
and later
The lawyers clean up all details
Since daddy had to lie
It’s not the most flattering song for lawyers, but its schmaltz is a guilty pleasure for me.
California Sex Lawyer by Fountains of Wayne
Oswald Defense Lawyer by The Fall
Legal Boys by Elton John
Doctor, Lawyer, Indian Chief by Hoagy Carmichael & Paul Francis Webster
