Any Honor Harrington fans? At All Costs

Thanks everyone for the replies to my earlier rant. It was the result of being tired and a bit frustrated I guess. There’s no question but that I will read the next book, whenever it comes out, I at least want to see the war end.

My favorite parts of this book was learning how the various societies work, the human element, more than the technical. And when Pritchart and Elizabeth finally meet, they will have something in common, that someone very close to them is dead because of treachery(from the same source)

Manticore’s Catholic Church is part of what is called Third Reformation Catholics, no? It was mentioned at Honor’s state funeral. With worlds so far apart, I can’t imagine the Pope on Earth(if the papacy still exists there) has much sway other then their own system. So does anyone know if there’s a sort of association of Catholic churches, similar to the Anglican Communion in the here and now? Interesting to see that the church(at least the one on Manticore) has become more flexible over the millenia.

What I guess I need to do is start the book over, and read it slowly and more carefully this time.

I don’t remember reading a depiction of the death of a treecat before this book. At least he and his human died together. I mean, I know other treecats have died in the saga, but I can’t recall there were details given of their death throes.

The Royal Family and the Alexanders are Third Reformation Catholics. We don’t have any information on whether there are other Catholic churches, but one presumes there are, else the adjectives would be dropped and they’d just call it the “Catholic Church”. I see no reason to suppose that the Pope’s authority would be limited to one solar system: communication lags of months may be difficult tactically, but would be perfectly reasonable for papal bulls. There was a time in Earth’s history when it might have taken that long to get a message from one continent to another, but you didn’t see an American pope and a European one.

Actually, it’s the Audubon Ballroom, no doubt because that’s where Malcolm X was assassinated. One of Jeremy X’s close associates is Donald X, who was indeed made for manual labor. Scrags ( who call themselves the Select or the Sacred Band ) were “adopted” by Mesa, not made by them. The Scrags were made centuries ago on Old Earth, and were a major cause of the Final War that devastated it.

A treecat is killed in The Stray in Worlds of Honor. Shot by a human criminal, saving Scott MacDallan long enough for him to kill her.

I seem to recall the phrase “not the Old Earth denomination” being used at some point, which implies it still exists.

Maybe we need a different thread, for discussing aspects of the Harrington works that stretch through many of the books and stories.

For example, Grayson armsmen. It strikes me that being an armsman is not so much a job as a vocation. It doesn’t seem to leave any time for having wives or children. I don’t seem to recall reading about armsmen ever being married. Jamie Candless was an only son, even, and in Grayson culture that wouls mean his immediate family line would die out, wouldn’t it? Talk about a sacrifice.

And another thing about Grayson marriage and religion. Has there ever been mention of divorce on Grayson? I know their faith and upbringing probably makes it unthinkable, but still, the unthinkable sometimes happens.

One more question, I’ve only read the novels. Where do I start with the other books in the Honorverse? And how many are there? I was looking at titles and there seem to be three.

Well, there’s the short story collections; More Than Honor, Worlds of Honor, Changer of Worlds, and The Service of the Sword ( by Weber and others ), which should probably be read in that order. There are also 2 new series set in the same universe, semi-interwoven with the main HH books; as of yet only the first in the series are out, Crown of Slaves and Shadow of Saganami, which should be read in that order.

Thanks; I thought I might have the wrong adjective there. I didn’t know about the Malcolm X connection, though.

It’s the magic of Google; I wondered why they called themselves that, googled the name and there it was; what with “Jeremy X”, “Donald X” and so forth the connection was obvious.

If you don’t read the others, you definitely need to read these two. They fill in a bunch of blanks on their own.

Yeah, somewhere you can probably find a timeline for how the books inter-relate, but generally speaking, Crown of Slaves takes place during War of Honor, starting right before Honor leaves to take command of Sidemore Station, and ending soon before the second war between Haven and Manticore breaks out. Shadow of Saganami takes place after War of Honor and ends during At All Costs (a lot of the books in the alternate series take place alongside events in the main books and eachother, with some scenes weaving back and forth, you might recall a scene in At All Costs where Home Fleet was welcoming home the badly damaged HMS Hexapuma, which is the end of Shadow of Saganami).

Anyhow, the short story books beginning with More Than Honor take place all over the place, but there’s places where they are best read between books. Generally speaking, if you saw a puzzling reference to some random thing in a Honor Harrington book, it was discussed in a spinoff book you should have read previously. You likely won’t see any references to Stephanie Harrington discovering the treecats until after you read More Than Honor, which is where (I think) that story is told.
